Job Summary

The Staff Technical Specialist - Racing Mechanic supports the development and testing, and leads the build and assembly, of racing vehicles for Harley-Davidson Factory Racing. This role is responsible for building and maintaining prototype performance racing motorcycles. This role will require operating in various conditions, with various tools, to build safe and effective solutions for data acquisition, testing, and racing. This role will act as a trusted advisor to riders (test riders and racers) and race team crew members, evaluating their needs and performing updates and maintenance to keep the vehicles operating safely at peak performance. This key role will lead a team of mechanics to maintain a fleet of motorcycles in support of a new H-D global racing initiative within the motorcycle world championship. This role may be required to split time onsite at both our Product Development Center in Wauwatosa, WI and our Corporate Headquarters on Juneau Ave. in Milwaukee, WI.

Job Responsibilities

  • Owns initial assembly and all maintenance for racing vehicles with the highest attention to detail and the unwavering responsibility for rider safety.
  • Instruments, tests, and analyzes data of prototype components, systems, and vehicles.
  • Troubleshoots and identifies root cause(s) of component, system, and vehicle failures.
  • Fabricates custom parts using basic machinist tools.
  • Maintains on-site and portable tools and equipment for testing and racing.
  • Travels, both domestically and internationally, with race team and maintains a fleet of racing vehicles for competitive events.
  • Subject Matter Expert for build and test of all race vehicles.
  • Provides consistent, professional feedback to team members including engineers and designers to further improve product(s).
  • Works extremely fast - on and off the track - but in a controlled, safe, predictable, and repeatable manner.
  • Trains other racing mechanics on supported teams to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair H-D racing motorcycles.
  • Assists Engineers and Designers to define as-built, and as-serviced bill of material (BOM), establishes minimum stocking quantities, and manages spare parts inventory.
  • Motorcycle license.

Experience Requirements

  • Automotive or general motorsport training from an accredited technical, vocational, trade school or equivalent is required.
  • Typically requires a minimum of eight (8) years of related experience.
  • Experience working on, troubleshooting, and maintaining mechanical and electrical systems of prototype vehicles.
  • Experience leading, assigning/balancing work, coaching, mentoring, and addressing job performance with vehicle mechanics.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the disassembly and assembly of vehicle components to manufacturer's specifications though the use of hand, pneumatic, electrical tools, etc.
  • Ability to fabricate basic parts and assemblies from raw materials.
  • Familiarity with cataloging, maintaining, and using calibrated data collection equipment.
  • Ability to operate basic machinist equipment including lathes, mills, brakes, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency working in a fast-paced environment that requires multitasking while maintaining a high level of organization and attention to detail.



Preferred Experience:



  • Certification in motorcycle maintenance and/or technology strongly preferred.
  • Experience working on a professional motorcycle racing team.
  • Leading on-track motorsport testing and development.
  • Experience welding via common techniques, MIG, TIG, etc.
  • Familiarity with cataloging, maintaining, and using calibrated data collection equipment.
  • Experience with engine tuning using both dynamometer and road/track data collection, including tuning with various fuels (common pump and racing fuels).
  • Advanced motorcycle riding skills.

The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience.
