Engineer III Tunnels

Location: 1400 Broadway, 21st Floor, New York, NY, 10018

Duties: Undertake tunnel, structural, and geotechnical work on a variety of projects, including the evaluation of geotechnical conditions for the design of underground structures, tunnels, microtunnels, and other trenchless methods. Produce design calculations, geotechnical reports, specifications, and drawings covering a range of projects from new construction, modifications, and rehabilitation to existing underground facilities and refurbishment. Prepare subsurface investigation programs for the underground structures such as shafts, tunnels, caverns, and ancillary structures. Assist in geotechnical field investigations for tunnel/underground construction projects to support project design development involving design reports, design calculations and drawings. This duty includes field oversight of third-party specialty drilling subcontractors during drilling operations, oversight of testing such as standard penetration tests, cone penetration tests, slug tests, packer tests and other similar applications. Prepare detailed field records, geotechnical soil boring logs, field notes and a final geotechnical exploration report. Perform design services during construction including the review of shop drawings and related construction submittals for support of excavation work including shaft and tunnel support. Develop numerical models to support design development for tunnels and related ancillary facilities (numerical models will include Plaxis, SAP2000, DeepEx, and similar software.) Perform assessment of geotechnical parameters associated with the relevant soil and rock units. Perform structural and geotechnical design calculations, including design of the tunnel, shaft and caverns initial supports and final linings of shafts, tunnels, and caverns, including concrete and steel structures. Coordinate with other disciplines for checking of drawings and evaluating inputs, capturing the requirements specified by other disciplines. Coordinate with AutoCAD team to develop the deliverables as per the project requirement, providing mark ups to complete the work as planned. Prepare geotechnical reports such as the Geotechnical Data Reports and assist in preparation of Geotechnical Baseline Reports. Perform construction cost estimates of the underground structures such as tunnels, shafts, caverns and near surface structures, utilizing cost estimating software such as B2W. Perform inspection work in the tunnels and shafts and prepare condition survey reports. Communicate with the project team, other disciplines and vendors. Less than 10% domestic travel is required for site investigation, inspection, and data collection. Position reports into New York, NY office; however, telecommuting from a home office is allowed.

Requirements: Requires a Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Management, or a related field plus three (3) years of experience as Tunnel Engineer, or a related occupation.

Experience may be gained concurrently and must include:

Three (3) years of experience in the following:



  • Utilizing cost estimating software including B2W.



Two (2) years of experience in the following:



  • Performing structural analysis of tunnels and shafts.



One (1) year of experience in each of the following:



  • Soil mechanics and geology including ground characterization of soil and rock to evaluate mechanical characteristics of the ground and establish loading conditions to be used in the design
  • Utilizing geotechnical software including Plaxis or DeepEx
  • Developing subsurface investigation programs, including field or laboratory testing programs
  • Performing field oversight of drilling subcontractors during drilling operations or overseeing field testing
  • Designing concrete structures
  • Designing steel structures.



Salary: $96,138 /year.
