The laboratory of Dr. Thomas Kehl-Fie in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine is seeking a full-timePost-Baccalaureate Research Intern. The intern will work in a research laboratory that uses Staphylococcus aureus to understand how bacterial pathogens overcome nutrient starvation during infection and will gain experience molecular biology by working with bacteria, proteins and nucleic acids. The Kehl-Fie lab values team-work, communication, and organizational skills. The intern will develop a research project related to how bacteria cope with nutrient starvation.

Annual Salary $38,755 to commensurate

This position is designed for individuals who:

* Seek training, experience, and mentoring in a research setting

* Plan to pursue a graduate or professional degree in science, medicine, or a related field

* Have US citizenship or permanent residency

Education Required:



  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology,Biomedical Sciences, or related field


Required Qualifications



  • Prior experience working in a virology, microbiology or molecular biology laboratory is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of the following:


-General microbiologic techniques

-Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, qPCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, gelelectrophoresis, western blotting

- Sterile techniques

Desirable Qualifications



  • Working proficiency with each of the following:


-General microbiologic technique.

-Standard molecular techniques, including PCR, qPCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, gelelectrophoresis, western blotting

-Sterile techniques
