Campus Planning and Strategic Investment (CPSI) plays a critical role in optimizing the design and use of university land, buildings, and infrastructure. Through collaborative planning and data-informed decision-making,
CPSI ensures both financial responsibility and environmental stewardship as we plan for the university's present and future needs.
We are currently seeking a dedicated
University Surveyor to bring technical expertise in
land surveying and mapping to support campus growth and development. In this important role, you will help maintain the accuracy of university property and utility records, guide major construction and planning efforts, and provide critical support to departments across campus. From
conducting boundary and topographic surveys to coordinating complex projects and

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct boundary, topographic, utility, and construction layout surveys
Manage complex surveying projects, including coordinating with consultants and internal departments- Maintain and update campus property maps and survey monument records
Review survey deliverables for accuracy and adherence to standards- Provide information and technical guidance to departments such as Facilities, Real Estate, and General Counsel on easements, land conveyances, and property boundaries
- Assist in the determination of unknown utilities when discovered
- Provide backup support in locating utilities using specialized locating equipment
- Review construction plans to identify conflicts with existing utilities or infrastructure and recommend adjustments
- Draft, review and interpret legal descriptions of boundaries and easements
- Maintain clear records and documentation of all survey-related work
- Coordinate with external utilities, consultants, and internal stakeholders to support project planning and implementation
- Participate in meetings and work groups related to campus development and utilities
- Support faculty and students in design-related courses and surveying labs when requested

Other Responsibilities |
- Oversee and guide consultants and staff in the development, accuracy, and maintenance of surveys, maps, and site plans
- Provide technical support and expertise to staff on surveying practices, GIS applications, and related systems
- Collaborate with the GIS Administrator to establish objectives for system development, plan resource allocation, and coordinate activities that support long-term GIS goals
- Participate in cross-functional working groups to help develop, implement, and enhance standards for enterprise GIS data, programs, and systems
- Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions

Other Required Qualifications |
- Strong applied knowledge of mathematics, particularly trigonometry, as it relates to surveying
- Working knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices as applied to site development
- Ability to read, interpret, and produce accurate plans, specifications, and technical documents
- Proficiency in conducting and overseeing land surveys, ensuring precision and legal compliance
- Skilled in communicating complex information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to provide expert consultation and testimony pertaining to land surveying
- Experience with industry-standard tools and software, including survey-grade GNSS, GPS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and utility locating equipment
- Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and university guidelines governing surveying practices, in particular Chapter 89C, Chapter 47-30, and Chapter 87-115 through 87-130 of the North Carolina General Statutes

Preferred Qualifications |
- Commitment to continuing education and professional development to maintain licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor, including fulfillment of ongoing competency requirements set by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (15 PDH units per renewal cycle)
- Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including principles of mapping and data management
- Experience using ArcGIS software suite, including ArcPro, ArcGIS Online, and relevant extensions
