About the Job

Global Gopher Experiences and Sponsored Student Programs are seeking an international student or alum of the University of Minnesota, who is currently or was a sponsored student.
This position requires someone who is willing to share their stories and experiences as an international student when welcoming new students, in particular during Global Gopher Events sessions and continuing with special projects for sponsored students. This leader will be part of the Global Gopher Leadership team, with a focus/specialization in sponsored student experiences. The student's main supervisor will be the Associate Director for Sponsored Student, with special tasks from other supervisors in different ISSS areas,
(by the Director for Student Engagement and the Director for Sponsored and Exchange programs).

Global Gopher Leadership duties:

o Providing advice and insights during Global Gopher Experiences (GGE)sessions (including hosting live/zoom event and meetings/tech runs.
o Leaders will be involved in the following:
* Providing advice to new undergraduate and graduate international students in the virtual
panel section
* You will be asked to write your script for accessibility purposes
* The live sessions are recorded
* Hosting Breakout room for international students, with a focus on sponsored students
* Provide insights during GGE planning sessions about areas for sponsored students
* Attend tech runs and brainstorming sessions
* Participate in the welcome pre-recorded video for new students
* Complete required onboarding training
* Answer emails and refer them to the appropriate resources
* Maintain and create new student content for emails and social media in partnership with the
Global Gopher Influencers
* Represent the international student needs in advisory or committee boards.
* Attend, organize and lead in person and virtual events
* Coordinate group events and cultural activities and make necessary arrangements for all
logistical needs (possibly including transportation needs)
* Attending cultural activities in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends
* Assigned tasks as needed

Sponsored Student Assistant: Provide support to professional staff in the sponsored student areas.
* Answer emails and refer them to the appropriate resources
* Maintain and create content for emails and social media in partnership with the Global Gopher Influencers
* Complete data entry in Google Suite, and Sunapsis. Use of APlus for student support may be needed. Training
will be provided
* Help with ISSS sponsored student events - international graduation, scholarship reception, New International
Student Sessions, sponsor specific webinars, etc.
* Provide nuanced insights on US Government funded programs
* Assist in check-in for sponsored students, collecting and explaining release of information
* Review student accounts and liaise with Third Party Billing for financial guarantees
* Coordinate group events and cultural activities and make necessary arrangements for all logistical needs
(possibly including transportation needs)
* Attending cultural activities in the afternoons, evenings, and weekends.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

* High school diploma or equivalent
* Must be a sponsored student or former sponsored student
* Understanding of the international student experience
* Understanding of student account system at the UMN
* Knowledge of US Government scholarships
* Grasp of Google suite
* Background in customer service
* Student must understand what it's like to be an international student (must be a sponsored student or former
sponsored student)
* Knowledge, understanding, and willingness to learn and educate about important current issues as an
international student
* Knowledge, understanding, and willingness to learn about college student development and university
culture.
* Good written and oral communication skills.
* Professionalism (as defined by our office), timeliness, responsibility and reliability.
* Enthusiasm and creativity.
* Organizational talent, including attention to detail & multiple deadlines.
* Able to work independently and under supervision.
* Willingness to learn, ask for assistance, and work with groups of people.
* Must be able to work on campus as an F1 or J1 international student

About the Department

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is dedicated to serving the University of Minnesota's international community.

Its primary mission is to assist international students and scholars in successfully accomplishing the goals that brought them to the University. ISSS supports the University's internationalization efforts by helping departments bring new foreign nationals into the community; by providing intercultural training for students, staff, and faculty; and by offering events that build links between the U.S. and international communities on campus. The office helps new international students transition to the University of Minnesota through Global Gopher Experiences, a series of virtual and in-person events, and convenes the International Student Advisory Board to ensure international student voices are represented on campus.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $15.25 - $24.00 per hour, depending on education/qualifications/experience.
