MH Physician Assistant EX

Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties to encompass but not limited to the care and management of patients in accordance with the Brown University Health's mission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patients.

Responsibilities:

Obtains and records detailed medical histories; performs and records complete and detailed physical examinations; records pertinent progress notes in the medical records; prepares discharge summaries for the attending physicians' signatures; draws blood for laboratory tests; administers potential fluids, blood, blood products and medications via venipuncture or venous cut down; initiates life saving measures in emergency situations until aid arrives.

Performing comprehensive and problem focused history and physical exams, interpret and correlate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interpret and correlate subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnose and establish a working diagnosis. Formulate a treatment plan for Orthopedic problems within scope of practice. Implement therapeutic intervention for specific conditions when appropriate. Exercise judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising Orthopedic surgeon or other health care professionals.

Initiates patient orders for admission as directed by the physician and in accordance with hospital procedure.

Assesses patient status; participates in the development of a patient care management plan with the registered nurse and attending physicians.

Maintain established hospital/department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control

Order, collect, and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures, and studies including but not limited to blood and tissue specimens. Ordering or performing diagnostic studies such as but not limited to EMG, electrocardiogram, compartment pressure measurements, and x-ray examinations including special x-ray examinations CT, MRI, and bone scans etc.

Assist in surgery to include but not limited to first assist, deep and superficial tissue closures, application of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon. Conduct hospital, rounds, write orders, and take call for the Orthopedic surgeon. Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment or therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals.

Evaluate, screen and council patient on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources. Design, conduct and/or participate in research studies, manage databases, and perform quality assurance.


Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Graduate of a Physician Assistant Program with B.S. Degree or its equivalent. Certified or certification eligible by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants. Certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

EXPERIENCE:

One to two years experience in a clinical orthopedic practice with experience in orthopedic surgical procedures.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians' offices and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are

minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions including use safety equipment and protective clothing.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Incumbent functions independently within broad scope of departmental policies, practices and physicians Patient Fare Management guidelines. Consults with superior on specific matters only where clarification, interpretation, or exception on hospital-wide policy may be required.
