The Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) of Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC) is responsible for overseeing the nursing practice with direct oversight of the Hospital's nursing departments and daily operations. Serves as the primary spokesperson for nurses at the Hospital and works as a representative to facilitate Inova's mission, vision, values and strategic direction of the health system. Is a member of the CNO Council and works in conjunction with the Inova Chief Nursing Officers and Chief Nurse Executive to ensure that patient care, clinical and staffing standards are consistent with the best evidence available, grounded in the Inova Care Imperatives. Is a member of the Hospital senior management and advises on best practices in nursing and patient care in collaboration with System Chief Nurse Executive. This role is accountable for nurse recruitment, training and retention at the Hospital. Ensures the nursing department and daily operations are compliant with state and federal regulations, as well as ensuring that nursing practice and operations are consistent with ANCC Magnet standards. Participates in cross-departmental decision making, conducts performance improvement activities and represents nursing services at quality committee meetings. Has a dual reporting relationship to both the system Chief Nursing Executive and the Hospital President and functions in a highly matrixed environment.
Chief Nursing Officer Job Responsibilities:
- Oversees Hospital nursing department and daily operations, including quality, safety and experience performance, finances, staffing, and strategic implementation.
- Utilizes research findings to establish standards, practices, and patient care models in the organization. Advises senior management on best practices in nursing and patient care.
- Leads quality improvement initiatives designed to improve clinical services, outcomes, and patient safety and care. Contributes to the continuous improvement of the Hospital toward an optimal care delivery environment.
- Ensures the nursing department and daily operations are compliant with state and federal regulations.
- Mobilizes the nursing department to actively contribute to the achievement of Inova's Mandate and Care Imperatives.
- Aligns with and promotes the Inova Health System strategy, with a focus on systemness, seamlessness, and stewardship.
- Partners with the Hospital Chief Medical Officer and System Service Lines to operationalize strategies. Serves as Hospital spokesperson for nurses before senior management and represents nursing services at quality committee meetings.
- Aligns the nursing staff with the mission, values, and vision of the organization. Supports and implements system-wide initiatives, including team member engagement best practices.
- Represents the Hospital and develops relationships with schools of nursing and the local community.
Chief Nursing Officer Minimum Requirements:
- Certification - Nurse Executive Advanced Board Certified Upon Start
- Licensure - Registered Nurse, Must hold or be eligible for a valid nursing license in the Commonwealth of Virginia Upon Start
- Experience - 5 years of senior-level management experience and 10 years of clinical experience
- Education - Bachelor's Degree, Nursing (BSN) or Master's Degree (MSN) in Nursing; Master's degree in either business or health-related field.
Chief Nursing Officer Minimum Requirements:
- Experience working in a large hospital setting with 500+ beds
- Experience working in a highly matrixed, service line structured health care system
