Job Description
Lead, manage and support the Small Business Team within the C&I Department. The Team Leader will be responsible for managing the Small Business Relationship Managers and the Small Business Production Manager within C&I. The Team Leader will also be responsible for managing the SBA Portfolio Specialist group within C&I. Additionally, the Small Business Team Leader will also be responsible for building strategy, shaping goals, providing support for business development not only for the Small Business Relationship Managers, but also commercial development within the Bank's Retail Network. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Team Leader:
- Lead the Small Business Relationship Managers by setting a robust strategy to achieve key goals in expanding and developing small business relationships in the Bank's network and footprint.
- Develop, under the direction of the Director of C&I, a strong forward-thinking strategy that implements technological advances for processing small business loans in a more efficient manner.
- Ensure that each Relationship Manager on the team is achieving targeted goals, most importantly in the growth of deposit and loan relationships. Goals are co-determined by the Small Business Team Leader and by the Director of C&I.
- Provide direction at all times to the team to emphasize production of new deals by streamlining diligence, supporting credit approvals in an efficient manner but within the risk confines of the Bank and driving a closing process that is effective for the Bank and the client.
- Ensure that all areas of government related lending programs (or of the like) are being managed within the confines of the Bank's parameters by the SBA Portfolio Specialist Team.
- Provide strong leadership to the group by mentoring and guiding all members of the Small Business Team.
- Maintain a strong credit quality and portfolio by ensuring that all Portfolio Managers are completing required maintenance on all accounts annually.
Other Duties/Responsibilities:
- Generate, develop and maintain large portfolio of small business relationships.
- Develop, along with the designated Relationship Manager, commercial relationships that are creditworthy, deposit rich and aligned with the Bank's strategic goals.
- Meet with applicants to obtain information for loan applications and to answer questions about the process
- Analyze applicant financial status, credit and property evaluations to determine feasibility of granting loans
- Ensure that the Relationship Managers can originate and close new loans to existing customers and prospects consistent with the Bank's loan policies and state and federal regulations
- Present new loan requests and other reports as necessary (i.e.: CARs, Loan Review Responses) to the appropriate approval authorities within the Bank
- Stay abreast of new types of loans and other financial services and products to better meet clients' needs
- Work with Relationship Managers and clients to identify their financial goals and to find ways of reaching those goals
- Manage and grow an existing commercial loan portfolio
- Along with the Relationship Manager, cross-sell other bank products including but not limited to: deposit products, cash management, merchant services, business credit cards
- Respond to customer and prospect inquiries
- Coordinate residential loan (to commercial customers or their end-users) requests with the Bank's residential lending group
- Assist in the collection/work out activities with troubled/non-performing assets
- Represent the Bank at various community functions
- Participate on Bank task forces and committees as assigned
- Perform additional duties as requested, needed or assigned
Experience and Skills
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Prior team leader/supervisory experience preferred.
- Extensive portfolio management, business development, risk management experience.
- Extensive knowledge of financial institution policies and procedures
- Strong knowledge of small business and SBA lending practices and related areas
- Knowledge of department support structures, resources and personnel
- Good sales, organizational, communication and public relations skills particularly in working with documentation that requires special handling
- Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build strong relationships and alliances across the organization, ability to adapt to change, ability to multi-task, reliable and highly self-motivated
- Superior customer service skills, exceed customers' expectations
- Fluent written and verbal English communication skills

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance or related area
- Ten or more years' experience in small business and SBA lending
- Educated in banking federal and state regulations and laws
- Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices, the financial markets, banking and the analysis and reporting of financial data
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Normal business office environment
- Light travel within the New England market, as needed for client visits
