IV Therapy: The Unit Service Technician works as part of the IV Therapy team and provides direct and indirect care to patients to ensure efficient patient flow and quality patient care. Under the supervision of the Nursing Director or designee, the Unit Service Technician performs various administrative and direct/indirect patient care duties for each patient. The Unit Service Technician also assures the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies best practice. Sterile technique experience preferred.
-IV Therapy:
1. PROVISION OF A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
* Anticipates and identifies patient safety risks in collaboration with patient care team and takes appropriate action.
2. ORGANIZATIONAL ETHICS
* Interacts with patients, families, and staff in a professional manner, projecting a positive public image.
* Respects and supports a culturally diverse staff and patient population.
* Delivers care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to and demonstrates respect for patient diversity.
* Respects and maintains the confidentiality and privacy of patient, employee, and hospital information at all times.
* Works cooperatively with all staff members and takes appropriate steps to resolve interpersonal conflicts. Seeks assistance from RN, Nursing Director, or Nursing Supervisor, as needed.
* Dresses appropriately and according to dress code requirements, including wearing visible hospital I.D. badge that identifies self at all times.
3. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES
* Efficiently organizes time and prioritizes requests for service based on urgency.
* Cleans equipment as needed.
* Responsible for cleaning and restocking of IV Carts
* Provides assistance to co-workers, as requested.
* Is flexible adapts to changing patient and department needs including but not limited to offering assistance to other team members and adjusting assignments.
4. MANAGEMENT OF INFORMATION
* Reviews and is knowledgeable of appropriate policies, procedures, and work rules.
* Utilizes hospital E-mail to access staff meeting minutes, notices, and memos.
* Provides secretarial support in order to ensure efficient and confidential flow of information for patient's medical records.
* Pages for providers as necessary.
* Provides secretarial assistance to the Nursing Director or PICC Nurse as necessary and as time allows.
5. COLLABORATIVE INTERDISCIPLINARY CARE
Accompanies the PICC Nurse to placement of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) and acts as an assistant to the person placing the catheter. Duties may include direct physical care of the patient. Routine functions include:
* Sets up clean work area and sterile field with supplies necessary for procedure and checks for expiration dates on sterile products.
* Opens and or drops sterile solutions.
* Assists patient with necessary position changes during PICC placement.
* Disposes of contaminated and used supplies appropriately.
* Cleans patient work area following procedures paying attention to the disposal of hazardous or contaminated materials.
* Maintains familiarity with expected patient outcomes of all tasks performed; recognizes situation requiring RN notification.
* Collects and records patient data including catheter placement on the daily log sheets.
* Exhibits strong understanding of surgical asepsis including recognition and resolution of any break in aseptic technique.,
* Ensures patient safety during procedures following proper lifting/transferring techniques including use of side rails when appropriate.
* Stocking of supply carts and collects and assemble daily PICC insertion supplies.
* Maintains patient logs of requests in database of PICC placement including reason for PICC, location, and urgency of PICC.
* Communicates effectively with PICC RN responsible for patient area so that they may assess condition of patient's venous access and likelihood of catheter placement.
* Develops and maintains positive working relationships with team members and patients.
* All other duties as assigned/designated by the Nurse Director.
* Utilizes Epic HER to document all appropriate care.
* Notification of need for repair of medical equipment to appropriate parties.
6. PATIENT/FAMILY EDUCATION
* Addresses patient comfort and information needs by providing informative, non-clinical information to patients and families, orienting patients/visitors to the hospital, unit, patient room services.
* In collaboration with the licensed nurse, reinforces the patient education provided by the nurse and provides patients/families with basic patient care instruction, such as instruction for using the call light and safety requirements.
7. COMPETENCY
* Complies with established practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and regulations, (for example: DPH, JCAHO, Boston fire codes, OSHA).
* Maintains and demonstrates compliance with hospital and nursing competencies and care standards. Maintains competence in relation to a variety of technical skills that may include but are not limited to performing EKGs and blood glucose monitoring, applying simple dressings and Heartsaver CPR and AED skills.

Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent

Licenses and Credentials
Basic Life Support [BLS] - Generic - HR Only required and Emergency Medical Technician [EMT License] - Generic - HR Only required or Certified Nurse Aide [CNA] - State Specific Certification Board required

Experience

- IV Therapy: * Staff adheres to all C.A.R.E. Standards * Successful completion of an approved nursing assistant training program * Ability to effectively speak, read and write using the English language. * Ability to pass clinical competency, basic math and reading testing. * Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations. * Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information. * Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads throughout assigned shift. * Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands, for the patient populations regularly served. * Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff. * Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work. * Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues and changing hospital climate and personnel issues. * Ability to work independently. * Ability to work in a fast pace, physically taxing environment.
