Compensation:

The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is$120,400.00 to$200,700.00.

Individual base pay compensation will depend, in part, on factors such as geographic work location and relevant experience and skills.

Position details:

You will work as an Engineering Manger on a Customer Order team. The you will work with is responsible for largely three things:

  1. Provide interfaces to manage Customer Order Settings and ensure their enforcement with orders. This has a surprising effect on how much manual intervention is required for an Order.

  1. Enable asynchronous workflows to "process" orders. For example, some orders require PO approvals. We provide the ability for customers or internal users to take action on an order before fulfillment.

  1. Provide analytics to the organization about the health of our order-create pipeline. This is how we make money, so executive stakeholders really care about these reports!

To give you a picture of our scale, we can see 100,000s orders per day and we need to ensure that we don't lose an order. We have on the scale of 10,000s customers that can potentially customize how we need to process orders.

We are looking for a technical EM who can read code and explain why architecture. Someone who will enrich our systems and the people around them. We want people who are excited about how their work impacts customers. Placing orders is at the core of Grainger's business and we play an important part in that interaction with customers. You will:

  • Be able to explain the SDLC and what good looks like.

  • Provide technical guidance and judgement to ensure the team delivers high-quality, scalable, and maintainable solutions.

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of projects, ensuring timelines, scope, and objectives are met.

  • Work closely with stakeholders to define priorities and align technical goals with business objectives.

  • Iterate on team norms, engineering workflows, tools, and best practices

  • Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Be accountable for the engineering practices used on the team and measuring aggregate outcomes

You have:

  • Track record as an Engineering Manager or technical team leader, managing and mentoring engineers.

  • Software engineering background with hands-on experience designing and building product software systems, preferring experience with event-driven architectures

  • Communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Mental models for software development best practices, CI/CD, and system design principles.

  • The ability to navigate ambiguity and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Growth mindset, with a focus on continuous learning and fostering the development of your team

  • Empathy and emotional intelligence, with the ability to motivate and support team members while addressing challenges constructively

  • Experience recruiting, onboarding, and retaining top engineering talent
