Project Title

Digital Transformation of Environmental Emissions Reporting in Aerospace Manufacturing

Project Overview

This 12-month internship offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual with a strong environmental and data background to lead a digital transformation project focused on simplifying and automating emissions reporting and improving environmental footprint within a high-performance aerospace manufacturing facility. Working closely with the EH&S team, the intern will contribute directly to our sustainability efforts by enhancing the transparency, accuracy, and efficiency of our chemical and emissions tracking systems.

Benefits of the Internship

  • Opportunity to play a lead role in digitizing a critical EH&S function.
  • Work within a collaborative and forward-thinking aerospace manufacturing team.
  • Mentorship from EH&S experts, chemical compliance professionals, and data engineers.
  • Potential to evolve into a full-time opportunity based on performance and company needs.

Main Project Deliverables

Data Source Mapping & Package Design:

  • Break down the facility's current environmental emissions report into common data collection packages, linking each to its corresponding data source (e.g., chemical inventories, process logs, purchase records, sensor outputs).

Automation of Data Collection:

  • Where feasible, implement automated data pipelines to collect information from recurring sources using tools such as Python scripts, database queries, or integration with existing systems.

Integrated Reporting Model Development:

  • Redesign and rebuild the existing environmental emissions reporting spreadsheet into a modular, automated data model that enables regular updates and significantly streamlines the annual emissions reporting process.

Learning Outcomes

  • Practical experience applying data engineering skills to environmental compliance and reporting.
  • Deep exposure to chemical usage tracking, air quality management, and regulatory frameworks (e.g., AQMD reporting requirements).
  • Hands-on experience with digital transformation projects in a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Opportunity to lead a high-impact initiative contributing to the organization's environmental footprint improvement and bottom line.

Job Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Data Science, or a related technical field.
  • Currently holds3.0 GPA or hire.
  • Available to work 30+ hours per week.
  • Strong analytical skills and familiarity with Excel, Python, or SQL for data handling.
  • Proficiency in Excel VBA coding (or a similar scripting language) required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and capable of handling large datasets.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage cross-functional teams.
  • US Person per ITAR regulations and able to comply with export compliance requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Academic or practical knowledge in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • Background in data engineering or software development (e.g., scripting, database management).
  • Experience with environmental compliance or a strong interest in sustainability and emissions reduction.

Compensation Data

Pay Rate: $25.00/hr
