About the Position

As a Senior Traffic Engineer within the Traffic Engineering Branch, you will lead the planning, design, analysis, and review of complex traffic engineering projects. In this pivotal role, you will serve as a subject matter expert, provide technical leadership, supervise a team of engineers and support staff, and review the work of consultants.

Key responsibilities include develop and implement traffic engineering design standards, identify and design traffic mitigation measures to enhance safety and improve traffic flow, oversee the design of traffic control devices and systems, prepare and review complex technical traffic engineering reports and analysis, and mentor and guide junior staff and contribute to strategic planning within the Traffic Engineering Branch

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field

  • Four years of related experience in civil, transportation, or traffic engineering

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Arizona State Board of Technical Registration or by the technical board of another state, with the ability to obtain Arizona registration within six months of employment

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

  • Experience with project management

  • Experience using MicroStation/AutoCAD and InRoads

  • Experience with design, review, modification, and approval of traffic engineering plans and designs, including traffic signal, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure, signing, pavement markings, and temporary traffic control plans

  • Experience in reviewing traffic signal and ITS design plans

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering practices and procedures

  • Experience in interpreting and analyzing data and writing technical reports

  • Familiar with the latest versions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (AASHTO), and national highway and roadway design guidelines and standards

  • Experience with traffic modeling software, including Synchro

  • Supervisory experience

Job Contributions

  • Prepare traffic engineering plans for various projects to include intersection traffic control, roadway widening, and low-cost safety improvement projects in accordance with Maricopa County and national standards and guidelines

  • Write and review traffic engineering technical reports, specifications, and develop cost estimates in accordance with Maricopa County standards for traffic engineering safety projects and studies

  • Participate in the development of project design concepts and criteria, review traffic engineering studies and analysis, and make recommendations for the selection of appropriate countermeasures

  • Supervise the Traffic Studies team, and review and oversee the work of support staff, contractors, or industry specialists/consultants as needed; lead the quality control process in the design and review phases of traffic engineering projects and tasks, including reviewing engineering reports, project plans, cost estimates, and special provisions for projects

  • Conduct intersection and corridor analysis using Synchro and other tools to understand queuing, delay, and Level of Service (LOS)

  • Assist the Management team with assigning and delivering projects and achieving Division goals and objectives within the schedules and budgets

  • Provide technical guidance to other team members, other departments, consultants, attorneys, agencies, municipalities, and the public regarding traffic engineering issues

  • Other job duties as assigned

Working Conditions

  • This position requires the employee to be in the office/field or customer-facing for all hours worked

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time

  • Position is typically office or administrative work and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
