About the Position

The Civil Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office represents and defends Maricopa County, its elected County officials, and employees in a variety of litigation matters in State and Federal Courts. Litigation attorneys handle a variety of cases, including excessive force, wrongful death, deliberate indifference, and other police liability matters; state law tort claims ranging from trip and fall to road design and maintenance issues; prosecuting environmental and zoning enforcement matters; defending medical claims; condemnation matters; and other matters as necessary. The successful candidate, depending on the level of experience, will be the lead attorney on the assigned cases, as well as assisting and collaborating with other attorneys to bring about successful resolutions to the cases, as well as providing clients with advice on litigation strategies and assessments of liabilities.

About the Civil Services Division

The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities, including Section 1983, tort, election, and tax litigation. We also provide legal advice to County officials on various public law topics. Additionally, we process public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. Our division has four practice groups: Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, & Probate Group; and Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax.

We Require

  • Successful candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate (Professional) degree from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Three (3) years of experience in civil litigation

Other Requirements

  • Valid Arizona driver's license upon hire

  • Successful candidates must be admitted to practice law and be in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application

NOTE: The Maricopa County Attorney's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement.

Job Contributions

  • Conduct legal research and analyze legal issues using both computerized legal research and hard copy tools

  • Handle a broad spectrum of civil litigation matters, including claims alleging various civil rights violations, excessive force, deliberate indifference to medical needs, state law torts, and many other claims

  • Assist appellate group when needed with writing and editing appellate briefs

  • Draft reports and status updates, motions, and various other court documents as necessary, as well as legal advice memorandum

  • Represent clients virtually and in person at status conferences, oral arguments, evidentiary and other hearings as set by the Court, and at trial

  • Provide litigation risk analysis and status reports to the Practice Group Leader, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, the Maricopa County Risk Manager, and clients on all cases and matters assigned

  • Responsible for compliance with the continuing legal education requirements and other requirements imposed by the State Bar of Arizona

Working Conditions

  • Office and courtroom settings in a high-volume, fast-paced environment that may result in some demanding situations

  • The work may require long periods of sitting while drafting motions and discovery, along with standing and moving while litigating your cases

  • Ability to travel to and from various locations for court appearances, depositions, mediations, settlement conferences, meetings, and trainings, utilizing personal or county-owned vehicle

  • Ability to move up to 20 pounds
