Job Summary

The Cat Scan Technologist performs computer tomography procedures and related techniques, producing sectional and three-dimensional images for interpretation and assists with interventional and therapeutic procedures.


Essential Generic Job Functions

  • Performs complex CT procedures.
  • Uses professional judgment when reviewing and obtaining patient's clinical history for procedures, ensuring information is documented and scanned into PACS.
  • Prepares, screens, and reviews the accuracy of the contrast questionnaire with patient and/or family member and scans into EPIC.
  • Identifies and/or administers contrast media related to CT exams as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
  • Reviews the patient prescription to verify appropriateness of exam and communicates with the Radiologist and Referring Physician if incorrect.
  • Responsible for calling physicians to clarify the prescription in accordance with appropriate CT protocols.
  • Verifies insurance authorized exam script and sends exam modification forms to Finance for insurance re-verification.
  • Obtains outside studies (CD), schedules them in EPIC, and ensures CD and reports are available in PACS for Radiologists' comparison.
  • Provides exam copies to the patient and requesting physician and/or family member.
  • Evaluates radiographs using PACS System to ensure proper identification and diagnostic value.
  • Uses consistent and appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from medical record, significant others, and healthcare providers to prepare protocols for scanning and patient safety.
  • Prepares patient for scanning including shielding and immobilization devices.
  • Determines appropriate type and dose of contrast to be administered.
  • Provides accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate level for the patient to understand.
  • Performs venipuncture, IV patency, and maintenance procedures according to established guidelines.
  • Monitors the patient's physical condition for any adverse reactions during the procedure.
  • Responsible for scheduled shifts including holidays and weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Adheres to the policy of Employee ID, Standards of Behavior, Attendance, and Punctuality.
  • Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies care specific to those needs.
  • Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies and Standards of Behavior.


Education Requirement

Required Education:



  • Graduate of a Radiologic Technologist program.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.


Preferred Education: N/A


Required Certifications & Licensure

  • NJ DEP Diagnostic Radiography License.
  • ARRT Certified R.T.(R) license required.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.


Preferred Certifications & Licensure

  • ARRT certified R.T. (CT) license preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Required Skills & Experience:



  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and radiological positioning of the human body.
  • Understanding mechanical attributes of CT software and hardware.
  • Thorough knowledge of PACS system.
  • Maintains CEU Credits.
  • Team members must achieve ARRT (CT) certification within twelve months following hire date.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within three months of hire date.


Preferred Skills & Experience:



  • Six months CT experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Epic and any HIS/RIS system added by the hospital.


Schedule Notes

5 - 8-hour Shifts 11p - 7a Monday - Friday, every other weekend Or 4 - 10 hour Shifts 9p - 7a Monday - Friday, every other weekend. A minimum of 2 years of CT experience on Siemens Equipment. Applicants with immediate availability to start will be heavily considered. Must be willing to cover 1 weekend of OnCall obligations if needed.
