Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Department/Office Mission:
The mission of the Division of Student Success is to work in partnership with the University community to deliver high quality services to facilitate the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse student population and strive to provide service, leadership, and transitional student support for UNCG. The Division of Student Success is committed to designing, implementing, and providing the services necessary to promote student success throughout the entire student life cycle from day one to diploma. This division includes the offices of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, University Advising, New Student Transitions & First Year Experience, Students First Office, Academic Achievement Center, TRiO Programs, UNCG Guarantee, GEAR UP UNCG, and the Multiliteracy Centers (Speaking Center, Writing Center, and Math Help Center).
Job Description-Reporting:
The Graduate Assistant for Student Success is intended to be a two-year assistantship and reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Retention & Student Success and Spartan Well-Being Associate Director.

Job Description-Job Duties and/or Responsibilities:
The Graduate Assistant (GA) will play a crucial role in managing and supporting the Spartan Funds to Finish Rescue Grants program at UNC Greensboro ( UNCG). This program is designed to help undergraduate students at risk of stopping out due to modest tuition and fee shortfalls. The GA will work in close partnership with Student Health Services and the Division of Student Success to track student progress, coordinate financial well-being activities, and support the overall success of the program. Given the close alignment with UNCG's Spartans Thrive QEP, the GA will also contribute to enhancing students' overall wellness and academic success. Financial wellness plays a key role in academic persistence, and the GA will help students navigate their financial challenges, empowering them to focus on their educational goals and thrive academically.
Main QEP efforts include, but are not limited to:
Key Responsibilities:
Program Management & Student Support:

  • Track the progress of students enrolled in the Spartan Funds to Finish Rescue Grants program via Canvas LMS.
  • Communicate regularly with students, offering guidance and reminders about financial wellness workshops and coaching sessions.
  • Ensure students are successfully completing financial wellness requirements (i.e., financial literacy coaching, workshops, etc.).
  • Generate reports on student outcomes, including engagement in financial wellness activities and overall program effectiveness, to inform program improvements


Workshop Planning & Financial Wellness Support:

  • Assist in the planning and scheduling of financial wellness workshops, ensuring that they are accessible and relevant to students' financial needs.
  • Support financial peer coaches in their outreach efforts and help facilitate peer coaching sessions as needed.

Collaboration with Campus Partners:

  • Work closely with Student Health Services, Division of Student Success, and other campus stakeholders to ensure a holistic approach to supporting financial well-being.
  • Coordinate with faculty, staff, and peer coaches to ensure seamless communication and support for all involved students.

Work Hours, Environment: The UNCG Graduate Assistant Work Schedule is the basis for determining the work schedule. Graduate Assistant typically work 20 hours/week, during office hours, which are generally Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. but can include evening hours for student programming. The supervisor will work with the graduate assistant to accommodate their academic course schedule. Vacation and travel requests during the academic year should be discussed prior to finalizing plans (example: booking a flight, etc.).
Required Skills or Prerequisites:
This position includes student contact and requires an individual who demonstrates the following:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at UNCG.
  • Ability to manage data and track student progress effectively.
  • Interest in financial wellness, student success, and retention initiatives
  • A genuine interest in and commitment to supporting students
  • Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, willingness to seek consultation with supervisor and campus partners, and openness to receiving constructive feedback
  • Strong ability to discuss difficult or sensitive topics while maintaining rapport and trust with students
  • Effective time management skills, self-initiative and flexibility with schedule
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly small group presentations with students, staff and faculty; that convey professionalism and respect in both written and oral forms
  • A general proficiency with various social media platforms, presentation software; and Microsoft excel; and/or the ability to learn and adapt to new technology platforms quickly

Stipend: $15,000 for the academic year
The stipend amount and hours per week allotted for this position are contingent on budget continuity for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, which is subject to change based on UNC System guidelines. If summer assistantship work is agreed, an additional stipend will be provided.

Tuition Waiver/Assistance:
In-state tuition waiver provided for fall/spring semester. Fees are not covered in this waiver.
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
