ABOUT THE ROLE:

The Business Banking Underwriting Manager oversees credit decisions and manages the workflow and production of the Business Banking Underwriting Team. Conducting staff performance planning, training, and development. Ensuring compliance with loan policies, underwriting guidelines, and regulations. Providing oversight to address credit risks and solutions. Reviewing and deciding on credit recommendations from underwriting staff. Collaborating with and offering guidance to Lenders and underwriting staff as needed.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:



  • Responsible for the development and training of underwriters. Includes the onboarding and training of new underwriters as well as the growth and development of seasoned underwriters.
  • Responsible for reviewing underwriters' work and providing feedback to foster development and ensure consistency with a high standard of underwriting excellence.
  • In partnership with Business Banking RCO, lenders, and underwriters, develop a comprehensive understanding of a borrower's financial needs and formulate a plan of action for loan structure, monitoring, and servicing of loan relationship.
  • Conduct regular team meetings to discuss workloads and assign priorities as needed to ensure timely completion. Share updates and expectations that pertain to business banking underwriting to ensure adherence to loan policy, procedure, and regulation.
  • Conduct monthly one on one meetings with underwriters to communicate performance expectations and review performance plans
  • Assist as necessary with regulatory and internal audit/file reviews.
  • Prepare detailed credit memorandums for commercial loan requests, clearly presenting findings and recommendations.
  • Analyze financial statements, tax returns, credit reports, and collateral to assess borrower creditworthiness and identify potential risks.
  • Monitor existing business banking commercial loan portfolio through interim financial reviews and annual credit assessments.
  • Ensure compliance with business banking lending policies and procedures.


WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE:



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education including upper-level courses in finance and accounting.
  • 5-7 years of experience working in commercial credit.
  • 1-2 years of experience in personnel management and supervision.
  • Strong desire and ability to build relationships within the Alerus organization.
  • Strong problem-solving ability with strong negotiation and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Self-starter with established ability to work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision.
  • Self-assured, good analytical skills, team player and leadership skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is typically performed in an office setting. The employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office utilizing proper ergonomic safeguards when doing so. Additionally, the employee must occasionally lift or move supplies and materials up to 20 pounds.
