Job Summary

The Principal EEG Technologist provides leadership and oversight to all levels of EEG technologists, guiding daily assignments, training, and professional development. Reporting to the Director of Neurodiagnostic Services and the Clinical EEG Supervisor, this role acts as the primary liaison for interdepartmental coordination and operational efficiency. The Principal Technologist ensures that all EEG equipment, databases, and workspaces are properly maintained and remain Joint Commission-ready, supported by the broader technologist team. They are also responsible for communicating technical issues and staff concerns to the Medical Director and/or Supervisor, as appropriate, and may serve as a subject matter expert (SME) to Neurodiagnostic Assistants and students.

This position requires proficiency in performing the full range of neurodiagnostic procedures, including routine EEGs, long-term and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) setups and disconnections, and ambulatory EEGs. The technologist must be capable of determining and executing the appropriate procedures for diverse patient populations across various inpatient settings at UCDH and in the Midtown outpatient clinic.

As a clinical and operational resource, the Principal EEG Technologist promotes compliance with departmental protocols, UCDH policies, and ABRET/ACNS standards while delivering high-quality patient care across all age groups. The role requires strong clinical judgment, the ability to prioritize and navigate complex situations, and a commitment to patient and staff education. This position demonstrates leadership, accountability, and upholds the highest standards of neurodiagnostic practice.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • Must be a Registered EEG Technologist (R.EEG.T) registered by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) OR a UC Davis CPR certification
  • Graduate of an accredited EEG school/program OR a combination of education & experience with a minimum of four (4) years of recent Neurodiagnostic/EEG Technologist experience
  • Must have a minimum of 4 years of recent Neurodiagnostic Technologist experience within a hospital setting
  • Continuous Real-Time Long Term Monitoring experience
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  • Knowledge of current trends in Neurodiagnostic (EEG)
  • Effective interpersonal/communication skills
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism
  • Adapts to change in a positive, professional, and productive manner
  • Skills and ability to measure and accurately apply disc electrodes to those predetermined areas, utilizing knowledge of the International 10/20 system
  • Must have knowledge of electrode placement to accurately monitor physiological artifacts and apply additional electrodes
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skill levels in the area of expertise to ensure the provision of the highest quality patient care services
  • In Lab Extended EEG Continuous Monitoring
  • Ambulatory outpatient EEG (hookup and disconnect)
  • Phase I, Phase II set up, care, interventions/troubleshooting
  • Continuous EEG Monitoring (EMU/LTM)
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency, and a positive, customer-service-oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with patients who are ill, angry, or emotionally distressed
  • Remains flexible and adaptable to changes in policies and procedures
  • Accomplish a variety of concurrent assignments effectively and efficiently
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to act, and to appropriately seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached
  • Must be flexible to participate in the rotating schedule for weekends and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Long Term EEG Monitoring (CLTM) credential from the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists (ABRET)
  • A Bachelor's Degree
  • Demonstrated leadership in classes
  • Demonstrated Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) experience
  • Experience with Live continuous EEG Monitoring
  • Experience in an acute patient care hospital setting
  • Experience with Continuous Real Time Long Term EEG Monitoring at EMU Monitoring Station

Department Overview

The clinical Neurodiagnostic Labs at UCDH consist of five specialty areas/units: EEG Lab, hospital (inpatient) and ambulatory (outpatient), EMG Lab, Sleep Lab, and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) Lab. Each unit is managed jointly by the Neurodiagnostic Services Director and the Medical Director to provide Neurodiagnostic Services to UCDH and the Midtown Outpatient Center.
