Molex is seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Electrical Engineer to join our team in Naperville, IL. This role is responsible for specifying, architecting, designing and verifying electronic devices based on microcontrollers, sensors and radios. These IOT based designs are for the purpose of creating solutions for our customers in the marketplace of medical/wearable sensors, tracking devices, loggers, tags, and smart labels.

This person will have knowledge of wireless interfaces such as Near Field Communications (NFC), Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi, and low bandwidth LTE-M cellular. This person is interested in designing battery-powered electronics that utilize very low power modes to extend the life of the battery. This person can select the components, design the schematic, guide efficient board layout, and bench level test the result. This candidate enjoys the design challenge and investigates issues to improve the design based on previous design experience.

This role reports into the engineering team and works directly with other design engineers, mechanical engineers, layout engineers, and test engineers. This person leads the electrical and software aspects of projects. This candidate understands the importance of documenting and following a documented product development process.

Product focus areas include BLE smart labels and wearable skin patches. Our design team focuses on developing silver printed electronic devices, flexible polyimide copper circuits and standard FR4 based design. We assist customers in the development of unique flexible hybrid electronics.

What You Will Do in Your Role

  • Enjoys innovating and working as part of a cross-functional development team on product architecture as well as the design implementation of sensor and radio devices.
  • Understands the customer's needs and applies the technology that achieves the need.
  • Proficient writing embedded firmware targeted to microcontrollers and interfaces with external devices such as sensors or wireless communication devices.
  • Designs electronic circuits using schematic capture.
  • Proficient at selecting components and integrate them with a microcontroller with timers, interrupts, A/Ds, PWM's, etc.
  • Experience with embedded system architectures, development environments and debugging (IDE/SDK)
  • Experience with software version control, repositories and release (Git)
  • Proficiency in C and experience with microcontroller-based development
  • Studies device specifications for electronic parts and selects parts based on performance and cost trade-offs.
  • Executes board bring-up activities to verify the full function of circuit using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeter, etc.
  • Writes code on PC to assist in board bring-up and design validation activities.
  • Understanding of basic serial communication such as USB, I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN.
  • Experience with wireless communication protocols, including Bluetooth, LoRa and 802.11, GNSS (GPS).
  • Enjoys the debug process (hardware, software) via rework (solder skills) and alterations to the design and embedded code to achieve optimal performance.
  • Experience documenting a design verification plan. Support to reliability lab for execution of design validation (DV) and production validation (PV) tests.
  • Provides guidance to a test engineer for creating an End of Line (EOL) test solution.
  • Estimates timelines for development work based on requirements and existing project workload and keeps track of time spent on various projects.
  • Research new technologies and propose ideas to advance our business unit's capabilities to stay ahead in the market.
  • Quality experience with problem-solving methodologies and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA, PFMEA, 8D, and fishbones).
  • Checks other engineers' schematics, board layouts, and fabrication drawings for completeness and accuracy.
  • Creates technical documentation to support product release based on individual project needs.
  • Interfaces with internal departments (manufacturing, quality, lab, sales and marketing) to ensure design objectives are met.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate the ability to express complex technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Supports Molex Quality Management by following approved policies and procedures.

The Experience You Will Bring

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the following: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering, firmware development, embedded systems
  • Proficiency with firmware/software coding (C, Python, etc.)
  • Proficiency with circuit design (Altium, or equivalent)
  • Understanding of flexible printed circuit technologies

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Advanced degree in one of the following: Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar.
  • 15+ years of experience in electrical engineering, firmware development, embedded systems
  • Experience with wireless products (BLE, Lora, Cellular)
  • Ability to design and characterize RF antennas
  • Strong data analysis skills

For this role, we anticipate paying $120,000- $140,000 per year. This role is eligible for variable pay, issued as a monetary bonus or in another form.
