Job Summary

#CA-DS

The Technician staff are responsible for drug storage, preparation and distribution of medications throughout UCDMC under the supervision of a pharmacist and perform maintenance and inventory functions. This position will staff various COVID 19 Vaccination Clinic sites as needed. Position will transition to full Inventory Management Technician duties as vaccination clinics close.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • California Licensed Pharmacy Technician
  • Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
  • At least 6 month's recent work experience in an Acute Inpatient Hospital Pharmacy setting
  • Experience Purchasing/Receiving in a hospital setting.
  • Experience with non-sterile compounding tasks using equipment including, but not limited to: graduated cylinders, mortars and pestles, scales, stirring machines, etc.
  • Experience using and troubleshooting automated dispensing machines.
  • Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
  • Must be able to accurately perform Pharmacy calculations.
  • Must be able to recognize situations that exceed technician authority and ability and must be referred to a pharmacist for resolution.
  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English.
  • Knowledge of standard garbing and cleaning procedures for a sterile clean- room environment.
  • Ability to operate Unit Dose (UD) packaging machines correctly and accurately, completing appropriate documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Board Certification
  • Experience with Pharmacy EMR system- Epic, Simplfi 797.
  • Experience maintaining iv infusion pumps.
  • Previous UC Davis Health experience.
  • Knowledge of current Pharmacy terminology and law.
  • Knowledge of current regulatory standards of sterile and non-sterile compounding procedures related to USP Chapters 797, 795 and 800.
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment exists at all times.
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem and identify the resources available to help solve the problem.
  • Decision-making skills to independently create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved.
  • Ability to impart knowledge and develop the skills of students participating in training programs, as well as new hires and staff seeking additional opportunities.
  • Knowledge of principles and applications for horizontal and vertical laminar air flow hoods.
  • Ability to manipulate needles, syringes, ampules and vials using proper aseptic technique.
  • Knowledge of dilution standards and ability to perform related calculations.

Department Overview

The Pharmacy Department provides comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps and teaching) throughout the Medical Center complex 24 hours per day. The Department is comprised of three inpatient, six outpatient pharmacies, a sterile production lab, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores and distribution. Staffing consists of professional and technical and administrative support personnel.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Must be able to work occasional overtime, usually during computer failure, unanticipated staff shortage or unusually heavy usage periods. Must be comfortable traveling to offsite locations for stocking, counting, and retrieval of medications. The position will include day shifts, evening shifts, night shifts and rotating weekend shifts. Must be able rotate between multiple job tasks. Must have good personal hygiene and dress in a professional manner consistent with the Departmental and UCDMC policies. Abide by Departmental attendance standards. Special protective equipment must be used for required preparation of hazardous substances and spill cleanup.
