The UGA Marine Institute ( UGAMI) is a world-renowned field destination that supports research and education in coastal ecosystems. The Marine Institute is located on Sapelo Island, GA, accessible only via ferry.

M-F 8:30-5:00pm with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities. Ferry departs at 8:30 am with no later option for getting to work. If you miss the ferry, you will not be able to work that day. UGAMI pays for the ferry fee.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
One year industrial, custodial or related experience is desired but not required. Also desired is a knowledge of floor machines and materials used in maintenance of carpet and resilient floors. ServSafe certification will be obtained once hired and paid for by UGAMI.
Position Summary
This position performs manual work in a variety of cleaning and related duties in and around university buildings and facilities. This includes classrooms, residence halls, guest rooms, lab rooms and offices, and vehicles. Work involves the performance of cleaning in an assigned building or building area. The primary responsibility is for the effective use of proper methods and materials in cleaning and caring for building areas and equipment. The individual works under close supervision and follows well-established routines and procedures. A small percentage of time will be assisting UGAMI special projects as needed, which will necessitate maintaining a ServSafe food handler certification and following instructions well.

  • Some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces.
  • Follow instructions completely and fairly independently.

  • Maintains cleanliness of assigned areas, including dormitories, visitor quarters, offices, laboratories, and classrooms.
  • Cleans bedrooms, living areas, bathrooms, and kitchens.
  • Manages the laundry of bedding for dormitories and visitor quarters, including washing and folding linens
  • Performs floor care, including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, buffing, and waxing.
  • Washes windows, walls, trash cans, and glass doors; empties trash; sweeps outside walks; frequently works from a chair or ladder.
  • Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies; cleans drinking fountains.
  • Operates a polishing machine and a vacuum cleaner.
  • Moves office and residence hall furniture and equipment.
  • Replaces light bulbs, cleans and polishes brass, and unstops lavatories and toilets.
  • Cleans the interior and exterior of vehicles.
  • Reports any observed structural or equipment damage.

  • Additional duties as needed.
  • Special projects may range from helping to prepare meals for important visitors or classes to taking on cleaning duties and/or landscaping to supporting island-wide events. (Some weekend and night work as needed).
