- Engage in community service through fair and impartial practices. Decisions and enforcement will not be predicated on race, gender, religion or sexual orientation.
- Serve as a member of the supervisory team for the UPD security division.
- May assist law enforcement officers with securing crime scenes, provide security services for special assignments, such as sporting events and concerts.
- Provide personal, equipment, and property security in assigned areas across Grounds and the Hospital.
- Provide daily operational leadership for the department providing security services.
- Function as a working supervisor, duties include unlocking and checking buildings and observing and reporting suspicious activity to appropriate parties.
- Act as a campus security authority as defined by the federal Jeane Clery Disclosure Act.
- Act as a responsible employee under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which includes timely reporting of incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct.
- Responsible for supervising, training and evaluating staff.
- Responsible party (Shift Supervisor) for each assigned shift and is responsible to the Assistant Director of Security for resolving problems and working with other University departments and community agencies.
- Must pass the DCJS Campus Security Officer certification and pass Security CIT training. (Training will beprovided by the department).
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous supervisory experience and the ability to lead by example and mentor team members.
- The ability to appropriately apply safety principles, evaluate situations, and routinely make decisions under varying and often rapidly evolving situations.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and approachable, and courteous engagement with the community.
- The ability to work with a team to facilitate operations between Security Officers, Supervisors, and other members of the University Police Department.
- The ability to quickly learn new technologies and have strong skills in Microsoft Office tools.
- Must possess the ability to project staffing schedules, navigate various computer programming applications and automated alerting devices.
- The ability to train subordinates on basic Security functions, assignments, and applications.
- The ability to apply progressive discipline concepts and interface with HR representatives for personnel issues.
- Applicants must be able to work a flexible schedule including mandatory overtime as a result of unforeseen circumstances and coverage requirements.
- Applicants must be comfortable with working in a variety of environments including outdoors, in the hospital, and in other University facilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required, preference is given to applicants with an associate degree or higher.
- 2+ years of work experience in a security or related field.
- A Valid Virginia Driver's license with a positive points balance is required, if applicants have an out of state driver's license they must be able to obtain a VA license within 90 days of employment.
Physical Demands Security employees are subject to respond to all types of situations including but not limited to, manmade and natural disasters, fires, weather related emergencies, other emergencies including those of a violent nature. Typical daily physical demands include, but are not limited to, standing and sitting for extended periods of time, driving, lifting, traveling and the use of both hands. Physical demands for security employees can change significantly from one day to the next based on the needs for a particular assignment and can include any of the above including, but not limited to, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing ladders and stairs and heavy lifting.
