Job Summary

The Protective Services Officer (PSO) Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the Protective Services Officers. The PSO Supervisor augments the UC Davis Police Department's efforts for the enforcement of all state and federal laws, the regulations of the University of California, and UC Davis Medical Center security-related policies and procedures.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides immediate supervision to a unit or group of operational or technical employees
  • Performing individual tasks related to the unit
  • Supervisory activities
  • Supervise unit operations to ensure compliance with departmental or organizational policies, procedures, and defined internal controls
  • Ensure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental standards and procedures

LIVE SCAN/FINGERPRINTING REQUIRED: This position may process patient property and handle cash, cash equivalents, and valuables as a result of job functions. The PSOs are fingerprinted as part of the Police Department because of access to systems that access criminal history (CLETS).

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • Current State of California Security Office Guard Card OR a temporary work Guard Card Permit pending clearance from the State of California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS)
  • A valid California driver's license, and have a clean driving record that follows local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program (DMV Pull Program)
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work-related experience/training
  • 2 years of minimum work experience involving overseeing and managing security personnel, ensuring the safety of a facility, and implementing security protocols
  • Supervisory and/or leadership experience to select, train, motivate, recognize, supervise, and evaluate the performance of staff and ensure operational success
  • Must possess strong people skills with strong leadership qualities
  • Must also have strong organizational skills
  • Must be familiar with all policies and procedures, and guidelines
  • Ability to make independent decisions based on those procedures and guidelines
  • Ability to read and understand English words and sentences, such as University policies and procedures, technical instructions for equipment, etc.
  • Ability to write grammatically correct, concise information to the public and staff, such as giving directions, explaining policies, and persuading others to comply with requests
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship and to deal courteously with the general public, patients, staff, faculty, students, peers, supervisor's and subordinates
  • Ability to perceive the possibility of hazardous situations, react quickly, and take appropriate action based on established policies and procedures and departmental guides
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction
  • Ability to maintain a presentable uniform appearance
  • Skills to demonstrate proficiency in the exercise of defensive tactics
  • Must have the physical ability to assist in restraining and apprehending combative subjects
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all co-workers and other members of the Health System community
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor under stressful conditions
  • Must have excellent oral and verbal communication skills to convey clear and concise information to the general public and staff, and students, such as giving directions, explaining policy and procedures, and persuading others to comply with requests
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy, patience, and courtesy in dealing with a wide variety of individuals
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods in an environment dealing with sick, injured hostile patients and visitors
  • Ability to use basic computer applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

The Protective Services unit assists in providing for the protection and safety for the University of California Davis Health System community (faculty, staff, students, patients, and visitors) and property as needed and as prescribed by state law, University of California Davis Police Department, General Orders and University of California Davis Health System policies and procedures.

Work Environment

  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco-free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis-owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space

  • Normal working hours include weekends, nights, and most holidays
  • Work schedule varies on a 6-month rotational basis
