Summary:

Oversee the operations and the personnel performing testing in a specific laboratory section or during designated shift(s). Function as technical resource for and provide guidance to other technical personnel within an area of specialization or during designated shift(s). Routinely performs the functions of a Medical Technologist.

Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities.

Applies an advanced level of knowledge and/or experience in a specific laboratory section or as an advanced generalist during designated shifts in order to provide technical oversight and conduct and interpret routine specialized and/ or innovative tests and analyses.

KEY FUNCTIONS

Functions as a technical resource for other technical personnel. Provides guidance and direction in resolving difficult technical issues: Sets up complex testing procedures trouble-shoots equipment and instrumentation malfunctions and defines testing parameters etc.

Oversees and participates in the orientation and training of new laboratory employees.

Provides for the clinical instruction of students when applicable.

Time and Attendance Records

Participates in the review analysis development and implementation of new and improved clinical laboratory procedures and techniques.

Participates in the performance and review of quality control and maintenance records providing recommendations as needed.

Performs complex clinical laboratory tests which require a professional level of knowledge in order to monitor testing procedures and parameters and to interpret and analyze test results.

Prepares and determines suitability of solutions reagents and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. Prepares variations of same for special tests.

Reviews test results for accuracy. Records and prepares test reports. Enters/relays test results. Discusses findings with physicians or other practitioners when necessary.

Monitors equipment operation; sets up and calibrates equipment performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs.

Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment instruments and work areas.

Provides all other essential functions of a Medical Technologist with consideration of age-specific needs.

Other information:
Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree in biologic sciences with appropriate clinical experience.

National certification (or eligible) in Medical Lab Science or Medical Technology by ASCP or equivalent. Master*s Degree in area of specialization desired but specialized knowledge can also be obtained through equivalent work experience. Five years* experience as Medical Technologist in a clinical laboratory setting demonstrating successful performance of complex laboratory procedures in specialized area of assignment or across multiple sections of the laboratory. Demonstrated leadership skills.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit stand and walk 1-3 hours per day with infrequent twisting and bending and lift 10-35 lbs with good body mechanics. Must be able to use either hand/wrist and perform work with slight deviation and frequent fine motor skills. Accurate near vision at 20/40 minimal far vision and moderate depth perception. Discriminate among red-green and blue-violet.
