About the Role The University of Virginia Financial Operations organization seeks an International Tax Analyst to support the University's compliance with tax laws and reporting obligations related to international activities. The role plays a vital part in ensuring accurate tax treatment of payments made to international individuals and entities across the University's Academic Division, Medical Center and College at Wise. Reporting to the Director of Financial Operations, the International Tax Analyst will:
- Monitor and record taxable payments to foreign nationals for tax implications
- Determine tax residency status and ensure proper reporting )e.g., Form 1042-S and Form 1042.
- Collaborate with the University Payroll Department to ensure accurate tax withholdings on wage payments to foreign national employees
- Serve as a resource to departments and international students, providing guidance on complex tax and immigration-related questions

- Review payments processed through the Accounts Payable, Payroll, and Student Information Systems.
- Determine correct income tax withholding based on individual's tax residency status, activity type, and payment amount
Prepare and submit IRS Form 1042-S and Form 1042
- Update 1042-S forms to reflect appropriate nonresident income tax withholdings or exemptions.
- Maintain the 1042 and make related income tax payments to the IRS.
- Prepare and distribute 1042-S forms and provide information to IRS.
Assist Foreign Nationals with U.S. Tax Questions
- Assist with U.S. income tax treaty exemption and tax withholding documents
- Act as a resource for international students, researchers, and faculty with U.S. tax questions
Provide Support to Payroll Department
- Work with the University Payroll Department to identify and apply correct tax rates to foreign national employees.
Assist with other tax reporting requirements.
- Provide support with other University tax reporting requirements as necessary.
General Responsibilities:

Required/Preferred Qualifications: Experience:
- Analyst: 2+ years of experience in an accounting, tax or compliance role required.
- Sr. Analyst: 4+years of experience in an accounting, tax or compliance role required, 6+ years of experience is preferred.
- US international tax rules: Required for either role to include specific knowledge including but not limited to GILTI, Subpart F, and foreign tax credits
- Computer Applications: Excel, Word, Office 365, Workday (HCM or other) required.
Education: Bachelor's degree required for either role. Required Interpersonal competencies:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $56,000 to $85,000; commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position will remain open until filled. This is an exempt level, benefited position.
