Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Technical Supervisor (Piano Technician) for the Mason Gross School of Arts. Reporting directly to the Senior Department Administrator, Music Department, Mason Gross School of the Arts ( MGSA), the Piano Technician is responsible for the tuning and maintenance of the entire keyboard inventory for the Department. This includes over 100 pianos, three harpsichords, and a portative organ. Pianos range from concert digital and upright pianos in practice rooms to concert grand pianos in the concert and recital halls.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Responsible for directly tuning or arranging for independent contractors to cover the tuning needs on a regular tuning schedule in order of priority and usage.
  • Tunes 10-20 pianos per week, ensure that performance pianos are tuned prior to all concert dress rehearsals and performances, recitals, and guest artist appearances.
  • Maintains a record of the tuning for each instrument to assess the need for supplemental tuning services.
  • Responsible for instrument repair and maintenance, performs necessary repairs and/or coordinates repair services by independent contractors or repair shops, regularly inspects keyboard instruments for damage and repair needs, and keeps detailed maintenance records of the work performed.
  • Creates an estimated budget of piano maintenance needs, manages inventory control records for the capital equipment audit, and maintains a database of piano locations, model numbers and serial numbers.
  • Arranges for piano moving and ensures the database is updated with new location info.
  • Seeks regular updates from repair shops when pianos are moved off-site for repair or refurbishment.
  • Meets periodically with the piano faculty to address concerns and seek faculty recommendations on replacements, new purchases, and the overall health of the piano inventory.
  • Works closely with Production Stage Manager on instructing set-up crews on the safe moving of pianos on and off stage.
  • Creates signage and communicates with students and respect for and care of piano inventory.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • At least 2 years of professional experience of maintaining and tuning pianos at an optimal level.

Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated training and competency in the trade of piano tuning.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, and experience with shared databases required.
  • Must be able to maintain professional demeanor and multitask in a fast-paced, stakeholder-focused, team environment and complete work with an understanding of the mission, vision, role, and goals of the Department, MGSA, and RU, and the role the tasks and responsibilities of this position play in the achievement of these goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Music or related field is preferred. Experience with Harpsichord tuning and repair is preferred.
  • 5 years of professional experience of maintaining and tuning pianos at an optimal level.

Equipment Utilized
  • Specialized piano repair and tuning tools.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to remove actions and lift at least 25 pounds.
