DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Office of the Chancellor provides executive leadership support through strategic advising, organizational coordination, communications, and administrative services that advance the Chancellor's vision and priorities. The office plays a central role in implementing campus-wide initiatives, fostering collaboration across academic and administrative units, and supporting efforts that drive institutional excellence, equity, and impact-aligned with UC San Diego's current Strategic Plan and future-focused goals.

DESCRIPTION

The Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff reports directly to the Chancellor and works closely with and on behalf of the Chancellor and the senior leadership team, leading or coordinating a wide range of complex activities and responsibilities. The Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff represents and appears on behalf of the Chancellor before a variety of internal and external constituencies, providing leadership and overall project and relationship management for key strategic projects between the Chancellor's Office and other units on campus and with the Office of the President and the UC Regents. The Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff carries primary responsibility and accountability for the progress and success of key campus-wide strategic initiatives, including the university's strategic plan. The incumbent provides the Chancellor with strategic counsel, guidance and policy support. The Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff is a member of the Chancellor's Cabinet participating in the formulation of campus policy, guiding the development of strategic and leadership initiatives. The Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff participates in senior leadership meetings including vice chancellors' and Health CEO meetings. The Associate Chancellor and Chief of Staff will recommend resources and budget allocations for key initiatives identified by the Chancellor and senior leadership. Responsible for providing oversight and supervision for Chancellor's Office, Chancellor's Business Office and Government and Community Relations. Responsible for providing management support to units with direct reporting lines to the Chancellor including Ethics and Compliance, Campus Counsel, University Communications and Marketing, and Athletics, as well as Special Events and Protocol, the Audrey Geisel University House.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.

  • Experience as an academic or similar organization institutional leader with an appreciation for complex issues involving administrators, faculty, students, alumni and external constituents.

  • Experience as a cross-functional leader and manager with knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.

  • Advanced knowledge of the legal constraints and opportunities for higher education in the State of California and through Federal programs and regulations.

  • Experience and expertise in strategic planning and organizational and operational design often engaging senior leadership from multiple units.

  • Excellent ability to establish mission and goals at the macro-level; to lead subordinate management to develop goals in alignment with mission.

  • Excellent consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills in guiding the university toward workable strategies and solutions.

  • Experience building and leading executive teams to achieve organizational outcomes.

  • Sophisticated leadership abilities to establish department goals, and motivate and influence others to achieve.

  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll.

  • Advanced knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.

  • Advanced knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures. Working knowledge of reporting structures and interactive roles of management within a complex higher education or related organization.

  • Excellent consulting, relationship building and strategic thinking skills in guiding the university toward workable strategies and solutions.

  • Experience as an academic or similar organization institutional leader with an appreciation for complex issues involving administrators, faculty, students, alumni and external constituents.

  • Experience as a cross-functional leader and manager with knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and large research universities to understand priorities, issues, motivations and constraints.

  • Highly skilled in navigating complex organizations.

  • Experience with accreditation processes and requirements for higher education.

  • Advanced analytical, problem-solving, project planning and implementation skills.

  • Advanced written, verbal, and presentations skills for influencing and facilitating sustained change.

  • Experience and expertise in strategic planning and organizational and operational design often engaging senior leadership from multiple units.

  • Skills to effectively lead highly significant engagements from inception to conclusion.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or related experience / training.

  • Advanced degree and 15 years of progressively responsible management and leadership experience in large complex institutional environments, including significant experience leading an institutional function and working with the top leadership of institution preferred.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Job offer is contingent on clear Background Check.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $169,100 - $400,300 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $80.99 - $191.71

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
