Apr 18, 2025

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Accelerator Physics Program (ALS AP), and will be matrixed to both the Advanced Light Source (ALS) and ALS-U Divisions.

In this role, you will join the ALS-U Beam Diagnostics team to support the fabrication, testing, and commissioning of various beam diagnostics devices. These include bunch charge monitors, feedback systems, beam position monitors, beam profile monitors, diagnostics beamlines, and more. With the design phase completed, the project is now progressing into procurement, fabrication, assembly, testing, and commissioning stages. You will contribute to all phases of this effort, working closely with the diagnostics team and collaborating across multiple groups.

What You Will Do:

  • Support the procurement, fabrication, assembly, and testing of ALS-U beam diagnostics devices.
  • Collaborate with other ALS-U teams to ensure seamless system integration and resolve interface related issues.
  • Conduct measurement, perform data analysis and evaluate the performance of ALS-U diagnostics devices.
  • Assist in the development of high-level commissioning software and procedure, and participate in commissioning activities during ALS-U commissioning.
  • Communicate research findings through review, seminar, publications and conferences.

What is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience with accelerator beam diagnostics, instrumentation, or related hardware systems.
  • Proficiency in scientific computing tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++ or similar software.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively write scientific reports and papers, present research findings at conferences and seminars, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $ 5,562 - $9,136 and is expected to start at $7,716 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
