Overview

The Assistant Director will work closely with the Director of Academic Development to provide vision, oversight, and ongoing support for promote student success in the School of Medicine and School of Health Professions.



Responsibilities

    Student Support. Provide individualized academic counseling for students in the Medical School and Health Professions programs; advise students as needed on policies and procedures related to their course of study; monitor and advise at-risk students' performance on standardized examinations; provide group advising sessions to various programs, as needed; and consult with faculty and program administrators in support of students' success.
  • Program Manager. Oversee the Peer Tutoring Program that services over 400 students a year from the MD, PA, and SA programs; Monitor more than 150 student tutors who serve in the Peer Tutoring Program; Directly supervise the student worker who serves as the Peer Tutor Coordinator; and Manage the budget for the Peer Tutoring Program and make adjustments to services as needed
  • Safe Zone Program. Participate as needed in the Safe Zone program for the LGBTQIQA community; Facilitate and advertise Safe Space trainings each semester to faculty, administration, and student leaders Additional Student Resources. Contribute to large-scale programming in the areas of student learning and student wellness; Assist in the development of resources of effective learning strategies, study skills, test-taking skills, time management, and stress management; and Provide workshops in mindfulness, efficacy of study strategies, and time management to students
  • Virginia Health Sciences Committees. Serve on VHS Committees such as the Professionalism Committee, the Policy Committee with the Curriculum Reform in the School of Medicine
  • Office Coverage. Provide coverage for the Academic Development in the Director's absence and oversee and approve Excused Absences in the Associate Dean of Student Affairs' absence
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Qualifications

Master's degree in education or psychology. One (1) year of experience in academic counseling, preferably in a higher education setting is preferred. Understanding of the rigors and demands of healthcare training programs is helpful.
