The Program Associate - Ornamental Horticulture will assist in research and extension activities related to ornamental horticulture. Research duties will include plot establishment and monitoring, data collection and management. These duties will be conducted in conjunction with research staff and graduate students. Extension responsibilities will include assembling educational materials in the field of ornamental horticulture, organizing field days, preparing research reports, and participating in scientific meetings, including the American Society of Horticultural Science (ASHS) and the International Plant Propagator's Society - Southern Region (IPPS-SR).

Duties:
Research Project Management
The successful candidate will support the ornamental horticulture research and extension program. The role of this position is to work closely with the Ornamental Horticulture Specialist to implement and assist with management of research/extension projects at research stations statewide. Regular travel throughout Arkansas for research trials and demonstrations is expected. Responsibilities will include creating plot maps and plants, establishing plantings of ornamental plant material, data collection, plot photographs, and detailed note taking. Additionally, close attention to detail will be a key job skill for the successful candidate. A willingness to collaborate with staff and growers will also be a critical job skill for the successful candidate.

Purchasing and Inventory
Regular inventory for ornamental resources, including but not limited to, plant material, propagation trays, nursery containers, substrate, fertilizer, and other miscellaneous lab equipment will be maintained and restocked by this staff member. In addition, this staff member will be responsible for ensuring that the purchasing and ordering is done well in advance and in a well-organized manner to maintain sufficient inventory of materials for upcoming and future field studies.

Equipment Maintenance and Assembly
The successful candidate will be responsible for making sure that all equipment is maintained in proper working order, including but not limited to irrigation controllers, mist heads, and plant physiology equipment. Technical instruments will require regular calibration, software updates, and troubleshooting.

Extension Media
The successful candidate will also support the ornamental horticulture program by providing up-to-date information for the webpages. This will include assisting with updating out-of-date extension publications and preparing new publications in the program area and sharing timely information to social media pages. Additionally, the successful candidate will be responsible for updating the material used for the Arkansas Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional (Certification - Arkansas Green Industry Association (argia.org)) training and exam held every Fall. Training for specific software will be available, but experience with writing/editing of research and/or extension articles is expected. Periodically, the successful candidate will be asked to present to stakeholders throughout the state and the region. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in horticulture (e.g. environmental horticulture, horticulture production, arboriculture, etc.) or a closely related field plus three years of related experience OR a related Master's degree is required. The successful candidate must be able to work outside during sunny and hot conditions in summer as well as cold conditions during fall, winter, or spring.

Preferred Qualifications:

A M.S. in horticulture (e.g. environmental horticulture, horticulture production, arboriculture, etc.) or a closely related field. Extension experience is ideal.
