Position Overview

Position Summary:
Under the direction of the ENMU Director of Athletics, responsible for managing ENMU's Rodeo program (men's and women's team) including the development, coaching, and management of all aspects of the program. This includes but is not limited to, leading practices, strategizing for competition, promoting the student-athlete experience, and fostering a positive and competitive team culture. The ENMU rodeo teams compete as a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA). The Head Rodeo Coach will recruit, train, and evaluate student-athletes, monitor student-athletes' academic achievement, and ensure compliance with all NIRA rules, and university and athletics department policies. Additionally, the Head Rodeo Coach will collaborate with other staff and departments to enhance the overall success of the program, provide guidance and mentorship to athletes, and build strong relationships with the community.


Requirements

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze performance and instruct co-ed student-athlete rodeo performers in event strategies and techniques to prepare them for NIRA sanctioned rodeo competition.
  • Observing rodeo student-athletes while they compete to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  • Instruct rodeo student-athletes individually or in groups.
  • Demonstrate techniques of rodeo performance/competition.
  • Supervise rodeo assistant coaches and other rodeo staff members
  • Attend all NIRA sanctioned rodeos in which ENMU rodeo team members participate.
  • Evaluate and recruit prospective rodeo team members.
  • Fundraise to secure sponsors for the annual ENMU rodeo, ENMU rodeo scholarship funds and other needs of the Rodeo program.
  • Serve as the lead administrator of the annual ENMU rodeo(s).
  • Secure and manage livestock for practice purposes and the ENMU rodeo(s).
  • Provide required paperwork to regional and national NIRA representatives related to eligibility, financial aid and other regional and/or association requirements.
  • Work with ENMU Physical Plant personnel to maintain rodeo facilities.
  • Manage the budget of the rodeo program with a commitment to providing a quality experience for rodeo team members within budgetary restrictions as established by ENMU.
  • Work closely with professors, instructors, advisors and NIRA officials to assure academic success of students and the rodeo
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Minimum Job Requirements
  • Associate's degree from an accredited institution (Bachelor's preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience required.
  • Experience as a rodeo athlete and/or coaching at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.
  • Knowledge of intercollegiate rodeo rules, safety procedures, and event management.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Valid NM Drivers license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to apply principles of rodeo management to lead and instruct co-ed rodeo performers with a variety of concrete variables in rodeo competition where rodeo standardization exists. Must be able to demonstrate how to perform daring and skilled rodeo events (i.e., calf roping, bull riding, steer wrestling, goat tying, barrel racing or similar feats) in rodeo competition to rodeo team members.
  • Must have experience that demonstrates the ability to schedule competitions and market rodeo events.
  • Candidate must be fully committed to a positive student-athlete experience, promoting academic success and graduation and complying with NIRA national and regional regulations, and ENMU policies.
  • Must have the ability to do fiscal management, recruiting, and administrative organizational public relations.
  • Must possess strong motivational skills.
  • Demonstrate a broad spectrum of competitive rodeo knowledge and experience.
  • Ability to work well in a highly fast-paced environment and be a team player with the athletic department and the University.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate strong moral character and maintain conduct that aligns with both the University's and state's code of conduct.

Working Conditions

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work in outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Regularly required to lift, carry, and move equipment and supplies between 50-100 lbs.
  • Must be able to ride horses, work with livestock, and perform tasks that require agility and strength.
  • Standing, walking, bending, stooping, and manual dexterity required for extended periods.
  • Occasional overnight travel required for competitions and recruiting.
  • May have occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens
