DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine is a multidisciplinary research center that was established in recognition of the enormous medical knowledge to be found in the marine environment. The structure of CMBB provides for UCSD intracampus interactions in the broad field of marine biomedical research. Membership in CMBB is from regular SIO biologists and chemists, but includes collaborating researchers from the Moores Cancer Center, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the UCSD School of Medicine and the basic sciences departments on the main campus. CMBB researchers examine a diversity of topics ranging from deep sea microbiology, marine animal physiology, molecular genetics, biosynthesis and genomics. One of the major areas of study is the discovery of new medications for the treatment of infectious diseases, inflammation, and cancer. CMBB researchers are sea-going scientists with international programs in numerous countries.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Gilbert lab is an active microbial ecology research group working to understand the roles of microbes in human health, environmental ecosystems, and the built environment. The lab is conducting interdisciplinary research that seeks to rapidly and meaningfully improve the state of our soils to support improved agricultural productivity, carbon sequestration, and human health.

Under supervision, work in close cooperation with the PI, project scientist, postdoctoral scholars, students, and the lab manager primarily in the soil health program and other programs as needed. The key responsibilities will include performing microbiology-related tasks including but not limited to sample collection, processing and storage of soil samples, conducting soil microbiology and greenhouse experiments, field work, extracting and quantifying DNA/RNA, conducting quantitative PCR, culturing bacteria and fungi, managing and analyzing data, and assisting in preparation of scientific manuscripts. Assist with laboratory management duties as needed, including ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, tracking sample location and status, and ensuring equipment upkeep.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry or Microbiology and/or equivalent combination of education and experience in biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field.

  • Theoretical knowledge of biochemistry and/or microbiology.

  • Some experience extracting and quantifying DNA/RNA and conducting quantitative PCR.

  • Experience in the preparation of scientific reagents.

  • Knowledge of sterile technique for bacterial and cell culture.

  • Knowledge of plant and soil biology.

  • Familiarity with sample collection and processing.

  • General laboratory skills and safety training.

  • General computer skills including word processing and graphics applications.

  • Ability to assist in preparation of detailed and accurate scientific reports.

  • Ability to perform soil experiments in a field work or greenhouse setting.

  • Ability to interact using tact and diplomacy with diverse personalities including academic, staff, student, and volunteer employees and institutions/organizations. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with a variety of people from the public to governmental agencies.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Strict attention to detail.

  • Valid and current driver's license, with ability to drive in a safe manner.

  • Some experience in managing and analyzing data.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Access to own reliable transportation preferred, or able to operate a university vehicle.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $55,374 - $66,064 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $26.52 - $31.64

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
