The Department collects approximately 87% of state revenue, enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially to encourage voluntary tax compliance, and apportions collections to the various state funds and local units of government. How you make a difference in this role: You provide taxpayers an opportunity to raise objections to the Departments tax positions short of litigation, applying independent legal judgment to the issues raised and ensuring reasonable and fair treatment for taxpayers. Job Overview: This position will be in the Administrative Hearing Office, part of the Departments Administrative Division. Under the general direction of the Chief Hearing Officer, this attorney position focuses on holding informal taxpayer conferences involving state tax issues. This position will also serve as an administrative law judge in contested case proceedings convened under the Uniform Administrative Procedures Act. Key Responsibilities: The Hearing Officer is responsible for conducting informal conferences regarding disputed proposed assessments, denied refund claims, and denied penalty waiver requests. The Hearing Officer develops and obtains the factual information relevant to the tax issues presented, researches the legal issues, and prepares a letter explaining the decision reached. When serving as an administrative judge, the Hearing Officer presides over contested cases consistent with Tennessee statutes and rules governing those proceedings. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must hold an active license to practice law in Tennessee or have a pending admission to the Tennessee bar.
