JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Extension is hiring an AREA MASTER GARDENER COORDINATOR - AREA C (south-central Pennsylvania). This individual will work with Penn State Extension's Master Gardener Programs in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, Schuylkill, and York counties, with additional statewide responsibilities.

This individual will provide regional leadership and coordination for the Master Gardener Program through collaborative relationships with the State Master Gardener Coordinator, County Master Gardener Coordinators, Master Gardener (MG) volunteers, Extension Educators, faculty and administrators. Responsibilities include direct supervision of county Master Gardener coordinators within the listed geographic area. The individual will be involved with the growth of the Penn State Master Gardener Program through effective yearly basic training, advanced training, development and maintenance of an internal communication system, and adherence to the program's strategic plan. The individual will also be involved with the development of a statewide funding portfolio including program cost recovery, grants and contracts, and fund development.

Hybrid work arrangements are available; base office must be within geographic area served.

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly supervise and evaluate efforts of County Master Gardener Coordinators to uphold the mission and policies of the Penn State Master Gardener Program through adherence to program focus, branding, and compliance with Master Gardener, Extension, College of Ag Sciences and University policies, procedures and systems.

  • Work with State MG Coordinator to plan and facilitate select statewide initiatives, which may include: advanced training for volunteers; the biennial statewide conference; and regional and statewide volunteer opportunities.

  • Work closely with the Master Gardener Leadership Team to set strategic direction for the program at the national, state, and local levels.

  • Work with State MG Coordinator to plan and facilitate annual remote basic training of new volunteers (via Zoom) maintaining uniform quality of training in all areas of the state.

  • Work with the County MG Coordinators to implement annual basic training of new volunteers in their area, maintaining uniform quality of training in all areas of the state.

  • Work with State MG Coordinator to plan and coordinate consumer horticulture media outreach effort utilizing various media including websites, television, print, social media.

  • Collaborate with the State MG Coordinator on program evaluation, including generation of a yearly impact report.

  • Work with State MG Coordinator and County MG Coordinators and College marketing staff to generate revenue streams through development of profitable consumer horticulture educational products and programs.

  • Raise revenues through educational fundraisers, sponsorships, and grants; may serve as Principal Investigator on grants.

  • Lead and participate in interviewing and selection of County Master Gardener Coordinators, orient and work with Extension leadership to set performance standards for staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirements include a master's degree and eight or more years of relevant work experience in horticulture, entomology, plant pathology, or a related field, includes 3+ years of supervisory experience. The candidate must have experience in volunteer management, the ability to inspire and develop leadership in individuals and committees and to build and maintain community partnerships.Must possess strong organizational and communications skills (both oral and written), and computer literacy including Microsoft Office Suite. Must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a car.Preference will be given to candidates who have experience managing volunteers and employees, a horticulture background, experience in adult or non-formal education, and competency in Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint and databases.

There is an expectation of regular travel throughout the individual's respective geographic area. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$68,200.00 - $102,300.00
