Job Overview: The Assistant Program Director is responsible for onsite and hybrid instruction, course development, and course coordination in specific disciplines to include lecture and student laboratory. They also develop and revise the clinical practice courses in their specific discipline to ensure continuity of instruction from the didactic to the clinical component and participate in student monitoring at the clinical sites. Additional faculty responsibilities include curriculum development, student evaluation, student advisement and counseling, participation in program policy development and program evaluation activities, organization service (participation in program, department, and hospital committees) and professional service.

The Assistant Program Director is responsible to assist the Program Director with selected administrative duties, including didactic course scheduling, student orientation, student advisement, student recruitment and admissions, visit clinical sites, co-chairing the Program Advisory Curriculum Committee (PAC) with the Program Director, and participation on the Program and Curriculum Assessment Committee, recommending new academic affiliations, devising and/or renewing affiliation agreements.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Master s Degree in MLS or Education
  • ASCP Certification
  • Minimum of two (4) years of didactic instruction and clinical training
  • A minimum of three (4) years of full-time employment as an MT/MLS
  • A minimum of (2) years of leadership/administrative duties in MLS
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

Essential Functions:

  • Demonstrates an ability to express self effectively in all areas of communication (verbal, non-verbal, written); utilizes effective listening and questioning techniques along with appropriate communication methods.
  • Demonstrates expertise of subject and stays abreast of changing practices in the field of Medical Laboratory Science.
  • Disseminates information to Medical Laboratory Science students related to the education and training for the Medical Laboratory Science Program.
  • Evaluates all education coursework, training and learning materials and/or activities; adapts courses and/or program as a result of feedback; utilizes accepted evaluation of all educational programs.
  • Evaluates effective teaching skills through appropriate instruction methodologies; communicates principles of adult education and applies adult learning theory when conducting programs.
  • Insures the development, implementation, evaluation, and updates of courses in accordance with education standards, guidelines and requirements by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Lab Sciences (NAACLS) and American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and hospital policy and procedure.
  • With the Program Director, establishes procedures, guidelines and manuals for the clinical education component of the curriculum. Makes effective recommendations of other educational materials, information, and supplies.
  • Coordinate student activities and assist students in developing technical proficiency. Assures rotation assignments through various modalities to provide similar experience for each student.
  • Assume responsibility for program management in Lab Director s absence.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for student records as required.
  • Responsible for the oversight of the multi-media materials.
  • Using the program s LMS, maintain all educational lectures and reference materials for clinical instruction in an organized, current, and easily retrievable manner.
  • Maintain professional growth and development by attending educational programs and workshops. Network with colleagues within the professional community. Review current literature.
  • Perform other duties as required and/or requested based on the needs of the patient, school, department and organization.
