JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a Research and Development Engineer to join our Applied Enterprise Systems Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. ARL/Penn State's purpose is to develop innovative solutions in support of the Department of Defense engineering and technology needs. In this position, you will support and conduct applied research in applied sustainment systems and technologies used in defense applications.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Assist in concept development and participate in the design analyses of engineering systems by independently evaluating, selecting, and applying engineering procedures and techniques to assignments
  • Identify problems and related technical issues leading to long term, generic solutions; identify technical approach for solving problems and meeting customer needs
  • Collaborate with other team members of different skillsets/backgrounds to accomplish organizational goals; provide ideas to improve organizational efficiency at group and department levels
  • Prototype and demonstrate enterprise systems architectures in support of Navy and Army business operations, including disconnected operations.
  • Investigate, implement, and evaluate new technology solutions related to enterprise systems functionality.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in defense and security enterprise systems such as SAP S/4 HANA Defense and Security and GCSS-Army.
  • Document and communicate findings and recommendations in professional reports and presentations to executive audiences
  • Develop innovative technical approaches for proposals and produce risk assessment and level of effort estimates.
  • Write and submit proposals for funded research
  • Cultivate relationships with existing and potential government and industry sponsors
  • Collaborate with other research and academic faculty at Penn State
  • Document research activities in technical reports and peer reviewed publications
  • Manage multiple or large projects; plan, schedule, conduct, or coordinate detailed phases of the work of a major project
  • Provide innovative problem solving approaches to enhance organizational capabilities; use peer network to expand technical capabilities and identify new research opportunities
  • Mentor assigned staff in the development of technical, project, and business development skills

Minimally requires a Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline and 14 years' related experience.

Required skills and experience include:

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, and meet project schedule requirements
  • Direct experience working with senior defense executives to define business requirements, evaluate solution paths, develop technical solutions, and deploy capability.
  • Experience with business process re-engineering or continuous process improvement in defense organizations
  • Experience collecting and managing requirements from multiple stakeholders and successfully delivering capability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred skills and experience include:

  • Experience leading defense sustainment activities.
  • Direct experience with current Navy or Army SAP implementations
  • Experience developing and engaging US Army customers

Your working location will be on-site, located in State College. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

**The proposed salary range may be impacted by geographic differential.**

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$123,200.00 - $191,000.00
