Description

The Building Maintenance Worker is a semi-skilled general facilities maintenance classification. Incumbents in this classification perform a variety of general and preventive maintenance and repair work that does not require journey-level skills.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be



  • Maintain and repair general plumbing components i.e., toilets, urinals, faucets, hose bibs, eyewash stations, showers, and drains and vacuum pumps and fire extinguishers and similar components as needed.
  • Install, repair, and replace various hot and cold-water lines.
  • Assist with repairs and replacement of various specialty gas lines, components, steam valves, traps and condensate pipes, sump pumps, sewage pumps, and laboratory waste pumps.
  • Maintain and repair general HVAC systems to include air handlers, fan coil units, split and package direct expansion systems. This work includes filter and belt replacement; greasing of bearings; duct and register cleaning.
  • Assist with ductwork installation and removal.
  • Assist with sheet-metal fabrication.
  • Assist with the installation of electrical conduits, receptacles, and switches, replace lights and ballasts, pull wires and cables as needed.
  • Assist with install and repair of drywall, ceiling, and floor tiles. Assists with the making of cabinets, counters, shelves, benches, partitions, floors, and door and window frames; door hanging and window installations. Installation of door hinges, locks strikes, sweeps and closures.
  • Paint and apply finishes to walls, doors, furniture, and equipment.
  • Move equipment and furniture.
  • Sweep, mop, and empty trash.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.


What we Require



  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • +2 years of experience working in a Facility Services department performing similar essential functions listed above.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Other skills required:
  • Must be able to use various hand tools related to plumbing, HVAC, and electrical work.
  • Must be able to move equipment using manual lifts, push carts and moving dollies.
  • Must be able to pull electrical wires and cables.
  • Must be able to read electrical ballast drawings and appropriately identify wiring.
  • Must be able to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems and prepare standard reports.
  • Must be able to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Must be able to use ladders to gain access to work areas and to works from heights.
  • Must be able to clean and paint spaces and equipment.

    The expected pay range for this position is $21.15-$25.50 hourly. Salk Institute provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the institute reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
