Ryan Companies US, Inc. has an exceptional career opportunity for an Executive Vice President and Sector Leader of our Multifamily sector.

This position provides visionary executive and strategic leadership and business unit oversight for Ryan's Multifamily sector. This role is pivotal in driving business development, strategy, development deal sponsorship, operational leadership, administration and cultural stewardship. The individual is responsible for anticipated annual construction volumes of $500M, and is charged with creating 6-10 development starts each year in our core markets. Strategically, Ryan is focused on self-developed work where Ryan is an investor and does not focus on any 3rd party opportunities in the multifamily sector. Additionally Ryan is focused on developments that we design and build.

This position will report to our National President. Ideally this this individual will be located in one of our core multifamily markets where we focus our work (These include Texas, Florida, Georgia, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Washington).

This leader guides strategic plan for the market sector, determining the team's go-to-market strategy, overseeing the development teams in multiple regions and serves as the lead executive contact for our multifamily customers and equity partners. The role will partner with the executive, divisional/regional leadership, capital markets, A+E and construction leaders across the company to identify, plan, secure and successfully execute projects across the US. Additional responsibilities will include establishing and maintaining Ryan's brand as a nationally recognized multifamily expert, helping build teams in regions where we do not yet have deep multifamily skillsets, and helping build additional programmatic capital relationships.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with 10+ years of relevant experience in a medium to large organization leading business deals and overall business strategy. Additional specific experience in the following functions is preferred: Real estate development, multifamily operations, construction/design/planning investment sales, portfolio/investment fund management, or overseeing these functions for a large organization.

Successful candidates will have advanced knowledge and proven ability to sell and manage the development, design, and construction of multifamily projects; be recognized as an expert in the industry with a track record of establishing new relationships and maintaining positive customer relationships; have proven financial skills and knowledge of project costs and feasibility; and will have strong interpersonal communication and leadership skills. Candidates must be willing to travel regularly.

Job Details

Executive Leadership

  • Recommends to the Management Team the short-term and long-term strategies for the sector including annual revenue and profitability goals.

  • Maximizes the utilization of Ryan Companies integrated Architecture, engineering and construction services.

  • Provides executive oversight for the creation and execution of the Sector's annual business plan.

  • Serves as executive sponsor and facilitator for decisions within the multifamily sector

  • Maintains a high-level of executive presence and visibility in the national CRE community on behalf of Ryan, joining the appropriate organizations and boards and being active in the optimal organizations to further the business development and engagement strategies. Determine financial support and engagement with appropriate non-profits.

  • Promotes meaningful collaboration between regional, sector and service leaders to ensure effectiveness of Ryan's matrix organization.

  • Oversees the asset management, demographic research, and key national personnel on the design/construction teams that work directly within the sector.

Business Development

  • Oversees the creation of development strategies for the Regions focused on multifamily development.

  • Collaborates with the capital markets team to develop and building sustainable capital relationships.

  • In partnership with regional leaders, oversee all land position contracts and arrangements ensuring the terms are appropriate. Ensure that sufficient and strong land positions are controlled while minimizing cash outlay.

  • Oversees any joint venture structures established within the sector.

  • Understand Ryan's primary competitor's strengths and weaknesses in your identified sector.

  • Ensure that the developers organize and execute their land broker relationship plans.

  • In collaboration with the regional leadership, serve as a key spokesperson for all project pursuit and project deal approval meetings within your sector.

  • Collaborate with Capital Markets and Legal teams to support the preparation of equity investment, JV, or loan offering packages, and growing our capital network in general. After equity is placed, and as is appropriate and/or required, serve (with Capital Markets, CIO, and the project leaders) as a key executive sponsor in managing these equity relationships.

People Leadership

  • Lead team of developers, approximately 15-20 people, throughout the geographic focused markets. We may not need to include the number of people but I think people want to understand the size/depth of the team they will lead and the resources they have available to achieve the goals.

  • Act as cultural leader internally and externally, reflecting Ryan's mission and values, and serving as a role model in general. Provide executive leadership and oversight in this regard. Participate in RGB weeks.

  • In collaboration with regional/divisional leaders, determine Development Team staffing plan and structures for your sector. Collaborate with Human Resources on compensation and incentives for development team members, securing signoffs from the National President, CFO, and Division Presidents as needed.

  • Serve as a leader who is responsible for succession planning (i.e. recruiting, mentoring, career development, and motivating of key leaders in the sector.

  • Ensure your teams deliver on diversity and equity goals and commit to an inclusive workplace.

  • Organize and prepare all materials for the periodic sector business review meetings.

  • Actively coordinate and align with Peer sector leaders to ensure that Ryan is operating in a similar and consistent fashion across the country and that deviations are strategic, well understood, communicated, and coordinated.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Advanced knowledge and proven ability to sell and manage the development, design, construction, and management of multifamily buildings. Recognized as leader in the commercial real estate industry

  • Proven financial skills, general knowledge of project costs and feasibility, as well as and Sector financial status tracking and executive-level reporting.

  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining a profitable business.

  • Strong understanding of proformas, demographic analysis, regional differences and general underwriting skills.

Education and Experience

  • 10+ years proven leadership experience in multifamily real estate, preferably within the development and/or construction industry with matrixed responsibilities leading business deals and overall business strategy. Experience with managing business unit P&L, cash flow and multiple LLC's.

  • 15+ years' experience in commercial development and/or construction, design or a related field in a design-build or negotiated environment.

  • Candidates must have a bachelor's degree in real estate development, construction management, architecture, engineering, real estate management, or related field. Advanced degrees are preferred.
