Daikin Applied is seeking a HVAC Controls Engineer III who will lead the development of controls systems for primary systems and sub-systems of commercial HVAC equipment. Come be a part of an exciting journey at Daikin Applied, where innovation and excellence drive our every endeavor!

Location: Hybrid, Plymouth, MN

What you will do:



  • Develop controls algorithm logic for Applied Air Handler products
  • Develop test plans and perform testing of components and sub-systems, supporting performance, reliability, and industry certification
  • Work cross-functionally with groups such as design, test, manufacturing, sales, and supply chain to ensure product design meets business needs
  • Drive the execution of the new product development phase-gate process, demonstrating appropriate design maturity and growth across various milestones
  • Have technical ownership of sub-system or system designs
  • Technical Development of HVAC system operation using controls systems and algorithms incorporate with engineering fundamentals such as heat transfer, fluid dynamics and mechanical analysis. Leading and contributing on the design of the following subsystems:

    • vapor compression refrigeration systems
    • fans, motors, mechanical drives, and variable speed technologies
    • energy recovery systems: heat wheels, air-to air heat exchangers
    • unit controls design and validation: sequence of operation, control algorithms, & associated control devices


  • Laboratory testing and validation of HVAC systems. Collaborate on cross functional teams to test functional of the system and new features in our state-of-the-art Technology Center. Gain hands on exposure to the operation and function of commercial HVAC equipment
  • Provide technical leadership to bring design concepts to production solutions
  • Partner with software team to generate unit controls software
  • Collaborate with advanced simulation teams to perform FEA and CFD analysis of design concepts

Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or in a related technical field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in product development, or combination of education and professional experience
  • Understand Refrigeration systems
  • Excellent communication, organizational, leadership skills and work well in a group setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a "team-player" mentality
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional team members with minimal supervision
  • Experience managing complex issues and problems and referring only the most complex issues to higher-level staff.
  • Possess a comprehensive knowledge of subject matter
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a group.
  • Desire to learn and develop world class HVAC knowledge and experience


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in technical, scientific, engineering, or related area.
  • Experience in HVAC industry
  • Experience in Model-based control, MATLAB/Simulink
  • Basic skills with CAD applications

The typical annual base salary for this position ranges from $101,700 - $129,300 in Minnesota. The range displayed represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade which this position falls. Individual base pay will depend on a wide range of factors including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
