SUMMARY

All Brentwood team members will work in a safe manner to assist in production, warehousing, and distribution of high-quality product in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Title

The Unwind Operator works closely with the Coater and facer backer Operator(s) to produce quality product that meets our customer's specifications. Responsibilities include ensuring that the proper raw materials are used in accordance with the work order, are properly aligned along with the substrate being free from defect to the coater. Communication with the coater operator for any operational or substrate problems or changes is key.

Complete neat and accurate recording of operations data while utilizing the appropriate forms and codes. Work using control tools and techniques to improve processes for better raw material efficiency and productivity.

Monitor all facets of the Unwind area to ensure that policies, production SOP's and safety procedures are followed by all employees working in the area.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Plant and Environmental Safety



  • Lives the Owens Corning Safety Standard "Safer Together" and meets all safety requirements. Safety is a condition of employment.
  • Complies with all plant rules and safety regulations.
  • Ensures a safe work environment through strict adherence to OC's safety policies and procedures while producing and running the Unwind with controlled power and speed, quality activities and communication with facer backer, coater operators and supervisor as needed.
  • Take personal ownership to work safely and hold other team members to the same high standards of safety.
  • Communicates safety concerns and/or equipment problems/abnormalities to appropriate personnel, maintaining strong communication with the appropriate asset operators to ensure immediate action is taken for product out of spec.
  • Inspect assets and equipment before use and throughout shift, keeping all equipment clean and operational.
  • Notify supervisor immediately of any accident, near miss or on-the-job injury when it occurs, no matter how insignificant it may seem.
  • Participates in the safety, quality, Autonomous Maintenance (AM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and housekeeping programs as established within the plant; including but not limited to Focused Improvement Events, Safety Committee, Training, etc.
  • Performs cleanup duties at workstations and/or equipment/machinery.
  • Performs job tasks to reduce environmental impact and adheres to the environmental regulations and recycling procedures for waste disposal.
  • Understands and ensures compliance with our Lock Tag Try system. Respect for the potential hazards within the manufacturing operation. Training and regular auditing of the process.



TPM

Participates in plant TPM initiatives - completing activities associated with TPM tasks (adheres to Clean Inspect Lubricate Tighten {CILT} standard, 5S).



  • Continues to use TPM methodology to gain a better understanding of the equipment.
  • Identifies and participates proactively in learning opportunities and develops expertise in those areas.
  • Utilizes Focus Improvement tools to problem solve.
  • Works to achieve zero injuries, zero defects and zero losses.
  • During Preventive Maintenance (PM) days, uses time effectively to bring equipment to optimal condition for zero losses.
  • Maintain Daily Management (DM) and Step Boards.



Quality



  • Monitors raw material for quality defects to ensure there are no quality issues or process issues down the line.



Productivity

As training and experience facilitate:



  • Work as team with other key operators to achieve high standards for Unwind operations, safety goals, and quality products
  • Accurately produces quality product in accordance with work order(s) using proper set up and customer specifications, raw materials and SOP's:
  • Ensure safety, set up, and quality specifications are consistent with the policy and effectively communicated to facer backer, coater operator, winder end employees and production supervisor.
  • Reporting of product(s) that doesn't conform to the physical or appearance standards and specifications.
  • Calculation of units of measures for all raw materials used/unused
  • Neat and accurate recording of operational data using appropriate forms and code.
  • MSDS knowledge of all raw materials used at unwind station
  • Monitor all applications of unwind materials and component substrates, splicing procedure with glass, paper, and mixed substrates, tensions, adjustments, accumulator rack operations and thread-up procedures to ensure proper materials meet quality specifications
  • Troubleshoot problems and work with team members and maintenance to solve problems
  • Provide back up support to the coater operator and facer backer operators.
  • Become a technical resource regarding the Unwind Operation process and equipment
  • Utilize knowledge of accumulator rack, splicing, tension control and adjustments.
  • Identify opportunities around procedures, efficiencies and housekeeping for the unwind and coater end operation
  • Ensure the injury-free performance of team members

COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE COMPETENCIES



  • Work with a computer to perform basic data entry
  • Demonstrate basic computer skills such as Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Pallet labeling system (IVC), Ignition and SAP.



EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE



  • Manufacturing or process related experience preferred.



ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT



  • Must:

    • Be at least 18 years old.
    • Remain drug free.
    • Have work schedule flexibility (possible rotating shifts; mandatory overtime).
    • Effectively and efficiently perform up to 12-hour shifts (with breaks) in an industrial manufacturing environment:

      • While wearing applicable / mandatory PPE.
      • With exposure to:

        • Extreme temperature variation.
        • Sounds or noise levels that may be uncomfortable (hearing protection is provided).
        • Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, and/or using full upper / lower body movement for process.
        • Ink / dust / dirt / fumes.


      • With the ability to:

        • Distinguish colors and shading.
        • Handle, control, feed, or feel objects, tools, or product.
        • Climb / descend stairs / ladder, and / or work from heights as needed.
        • Become certified to operate a forklift (if/as needed).
        • Repetitively and freely:

          • Perform movements of body, hand, arm, leg.
          • Bend, twist, squat, walk, sit, stand; to include waist, back and knee motion.
          • Lift, push and pull 40lbs.
