The program

The Australia Awards Global Support Mechanism (AAGSM) is a new initiative designed to enhance the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's (DFAT) international scholarship program delivery by providing operational, technical and analytical services. The AAGSM consists of the Program Support Unit (PSU) - responsible for operational and technical services to DFAT and the scholarship delivery network, and the Research and Analytical Support Unit (RASU) - responsible for analytical and research services for international scholarship programs. Palladium delivers the AAGSM PSU and cooperates with DFAT to ensure effective functioning with the RASU.

The role

As Communications and Public Diplomacy Manager, you will be part of the senior management team (SMT), significantly contributing to program leadership and achievement of outcomes. You will lead the inputs and workflow of the communication and public diplomacy team to deliver high quality, efficient, coherent, consistent and fit for purpose communications and public diplomacy support services that also promote gender equality, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI) outcomes throughout DFAT's international scholarship programs network.

You will:

  • Work with DFAT to develop and oversee implementation of a Global Communications and Public Diplomacy Strategy.
  • Provide leadership to the Communications and Public Diplomacy team to ensure services build a cohort of engaged alumni leaders, enhance brand management and facilitate public diplomacy outcomes. Oversee high quality delivery of large-scale events, professional and on brand communications products and engaging digital communications.
  • Work closely with the SMT to ensure coherent communications and public diplomacy support services across the PSU including fellowships.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration, efficiency and to deliver innovative approaches to delivering outcomes and strategic priorities, including collaboration with other DFAT funded public diplomacy programs.
  • Oversee and quality assure on demand communications and public diplomacy services to country programs including but not limited to, communications and alumni engagement strategies and plans.
  • Lead communication and public diplomacy inputs into knowledge sharing activities to support peer-to-peer leaning, share knowledge and good practice, and strengthen capability across the scholarship network.

About you

This is a job for a passionate professional, who exhibits flair and creativity alongside:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline such as communications, public relations or international development.
  • Substantial experience in the field of communications, public diplomacy and/or stakeholder engagement, preferably within the university, international education or development sectors.
  • Experience in international scholarship program management, public diplomacy programs and/or strategic alumni engagement is highly desirable.
  • Expertise in team leadership and management, particularly for a diverse/multi-cultural team. Demonstrated ability to set priorities, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and deliver outputs to specified deadlines and quality standards.
  • Notable experience in designing and delivering high-profile large-scale events to a professional standard with high levels of stakeholder satisfaction.
  • Demonstrated excellence in client management and stakeholder engagement to maintain engaged and productive relationships. Excellent interpersonal and social skills including cross-cultural experience and communication skills.
  • Professional writing skills with the ability to adapt writing styles to different audiences and purposes, influencing a wide range of stakeholders.
