YOUR ROLE: As a Senior Fermentation Scientist, you will lead the development and optimization of E. coli and yeast-based fermentation processes to support new product launches and improve existing workflows. You will design and execute experiments to enhance strain performance, optimize media compositions, and refine process parameters to maximize yield, purity, and scalability. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, you will play a key role in tech transfer, process validation, and troubleshooting complex production issues. Additionally, you will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, implementing innovations in fermentation technology and automation to enhance efficiency and reproducibility. Your expertise will directly impact Promega's ability to bring high-quality, scalable microbial-based products to market.

CORE DUTIES:

1. Independently manufactures a variety of products to meet product specifications. Identifies complex scientific aspects and requirements for the manufacture and QC of product.

2. Develops and performs assays to ensure that products meet existing quality control requirements. Responds to customer complaints and makes recommendations for QA hold/product recall and for quality improvements.

3. Operational lead on multidisciplinary product improvement projects and development teams related to new product launches and change control. Solicits cross-functional input and leads key decision meetings with project sponsors that result in project success.

4. Develops plans, goals, and milestones for projects in work area. Analyzes operational and cost impacts of process/product improvements. Identifies/solicits internal or external staff to solve problems, supports accomplishment of project/team goals. Monitors progress of projects and leads team to meet objectives and effectively communicates team/project goals through presentations and reports.

5. Primary resource for understanding and implementing emerging technologies within work area.

6. Determines product and equipment improvements that help meet operational needs.

7. Designs experiments or plans to evaluate whether process capabilities are sufficient to meet business needs and customer requirements. Interacts with other departments, outside collaborators, or external suppliers or customers, as required for special projects.

8. Demonstrated understanding of quality requirements that relate to both business needs and regulatory standards. Uses expertise in ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 Quality System requirements (e.g. complaint investigation, nonconformance, change control) to guide decision making.

9. Provides training to other Production Scientists and backs up/fills in for supervisor as needed.

10. Demonstrates good documentation practices and consistently produces high quality products and documentation. Follows existing policies for data recording and record keeping.

11. Demonstrates inclusion through their own words and actions and is accountable for a safe workspace. Acts with kindness, curiosity and respect for others.

13. Understands and complies with ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements applicable to our business.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

1. B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. degree in a scientific discipline (e.g., Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology). Degree and 12+ years of postgraduate lab experience in industrial manufacturing operations as reflected in a proven record of accomplishment in the Core Duties of this position are used to determine qualification.

2. Documented record of leadership in experimental design, innovation, and problem solving relevant to this position.

3. Excellent multi-tasking skills; able to manage several projects and/or products or keep several assays going simultaneously. Ability to effectively work on many priorities at one time, which change frequently.

4. Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team. Recognized for organized, effective, and professional written and verbal communication skills. Strong ability to independently resolve interpersonal conflicts.

5. Strong ability to identify customer needs and expectations, and respond to them in a timely and effective manner. Recognizes opportunities and initiates actions to capitalize on them.

6. Ability to interpret and communicate scientific results and interact productively with others on the team. Contributes to achievement and success of a team.

7. Ability to use a computer/Microsoft Office applications.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Ability to work at a laboratory bench for extended periods of time.

2. Ability to work with hazardous materials (e.g. chemicals, radioactivity, electrical equipment) so as not to endanger oneself or others.

3. Ability to use standard laboratory protective equipment.
