About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants' Arizona team is seeking a self-motivated Staff Environmental Planner with strong interpersonal skills and education and experience in natural resources or environmental planning. This is a strategic growth opportunity for the right candidate to help grow our expanding environmental planning practice.

This is a regular status, full-time position, reporting to SWCA's Planning Team Lead in one of SWCA's Arizona offices (Flagstaff, Phoenix, or Tucson). Work can be based in the office, in a hybrid work arrangement, or distributed, for those located in the region.

What you will accomplish

  • Assist in the preparation of environmental documents for a variety of state and federal agencies.
  • Support a variety of project types including but not limited to: energy transmission and generation, land use development, land use planning, administrative record management, and public and stakeholder involvement.
  • Assist staff with preparation of NEPA related documents such as Categorical Exclusions (CEs), Environmental Assessments (EAs), and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs).
  • Assist staff with federal and state permitting applications.
  • Work may include project compliance support, budget and milestone coordination, proposal support, and project coordination.
  • Work closely with, and be mentored by, industry leading environmental planners and permitters.
  • Adheres to the safety program and looks out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, biology, ecology, recreation, socioeconomics, rangeland management, geology, soils, environmental studies, or related field.
  • Six (6) months of relevant experience with natural resources work (e.g., environmental planning, water resources, biological resources, or land use planning) through professional experience, honors thesis or Capstone projects, or volunteer work.
  • Experience writing technical documents, demonstrated ability to apply logic and execute critical thinking.
  • Good organizational, oral, analytical, and document management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, including an ability to work on more than one project at a time.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure with schedule constraints.
  • Ability to gauge project workload and manage priorities.
  • Willingness to learn, ask questions, have fun, and grow into increased management responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Adobe Acrobat).
  • Possess a valid driver's license and personal vehicle to travel to office, project sites and meetings.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 1 to 2 years of relevant experience with natural resources work (e.g., environmental planning, water resources, biological resources, or land use planning) through professional experience, honors thesis or Capstone projects, or volunteer work.

An employee in this Arizona-based position can expect an hourly rate of:

  • Staff Environmental Planner = $24.91 - $31.80
  • Assistant Staff Environmental Planner = $22.26 - $28.09

Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
