Job Summary

As the Assistant Director of First Year Advising & Retention for the Center for Advising, Retention, and Completion (CARC) at Georgia Southern, you will lead initiatives to strengthen advising practices and retention strategies for first-year students. You will develop, train, and assess department-level advising practices at SOAR, and coordinate first-year retention and re-enrollment strategies to support student success.

You will oversee first-year course advisement practices in Math and English, including learning support, and ensure smooth collaboration between admissions and academic partners to provide a seamless experience from admission to enrollment. Additionally, you will coordinate department participation in recruiting and admissions events to attract and support incoming students. In this role, you will supervise up to two coordinators, specialize in aligning academic curricula with advising practices, and collaborate with Assistant and Associate Directors on departmental projects to enhance advising operations and improve student outcomes. The Assistant Director of First Year Advising & Retention consistently exhibits service, collaboration, and excellence as championed by the Division of Enrollment, Marketing and Student Success .

Responsibilities
  • Develop, train, and assess department level advising practices at SOAR
  • Coordinate department participation in recruiting and admissions events
  • Liaise with Admissions and Academic partners for smooth student experience from admission to enrollment
  • Oversee first year course advisement practices in Math and English, including learning support
  • Supervise and support up to two coordinators
  • Specialize in academic curriculum aligning with team of coordinators
  • Collaborate with Assistant and Associate Directors on departmental projects and operations
  • Coordinate first-year retention strategy
  • Coordinate first-year re-enrollment strategy


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
  • Masters degree, to be completed prior to the date of hire

Required Experience
  • Five (5) years of advising/retention experience in a higher education setting
  • Two or more (2+) years of leadership, supervisory, or human resources experience
  • Two or more years (2+) experience: working with first-year advising, orientation programming, student retention


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience
  • One or more (1+) years experience in advising or assessment
  • Project management experience
  • Program development experience
  • Budget management experience


Proposed Salary

$64,000

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
