The R&D Leader, Binder development will be responsible for driving the development of cutting-edge binder solutions, identifying market trends, and implementing strategies to maintain Owens Corning's competitive edge in the industry. This role will collaborate with cross-functional teams and customers to bring innovative ideas to fruition and ensure successful product launches Reports To: VP, Insulation R&D Span of Control: Directly leads a team of 6 with a total organization size of 13
Enable Customer Backed Innovation Where to Play
- Lead the innovation strategy for binder development, including ideation, research, and development of new binder and additives used in our binder solutions
- Identify emerging market and regulatory trends and customer needs related to binder
How to Win
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to design and develop innovative fiber-based solutions.
- Manage the binder development lifecycle from concept to commercialization, ensuring timelines and budget objectives are met.
- Leverage market analysis and competitive intelligence to inform product positioning and differentiation strategies.
- Build and maintain relationships with external suppliers, and research institutions to access new technologies and resources
Core Capabilities
- Technical expertise: strong understanding of binder chemistry, it's interaction with fiber matrix, fiber products, materials and processes to drive new binder development in support of the Insulation strategy and network transformation 2025-27. Therefore, strong chemistry skills in organic chemistry, technical fiberglas insulation products and binder implementation will be important.
- Cross Functional Collaboration: work collaboratively across functions including marketing, sales, strategy, etc to align customer insights with business priorities.
Fiber Materials and Process Innovation
- Strategic Focus: Ensures alignment of binder innovation efforts with OC's most critical productivity and growth needs. Provides a common language and guiding principles to achieve organizational alignment on the strategic approach and initiatives portfolio.
- Initiatives Portfolio: Builds a healthy pipeline of binder concepts for disproportionate value creation from Insulation to the Enterprise. Drives the timely identification, selection and development of the best opportunities to pursue and commercialize 1-5 years out.
- Initiative Master Plan: Determines the projects sequence and pace that delivers innovation objectives on time. Effectively coordinates initiative's resourcing with the corresponding BU [core + "flow-to-work" resources]
Program Leaders - Enterprise Core Product Transformations
- Drives the overall technical evaluation and learning process:
(a) the key invention (is it real?) (b) product differentiation (can we win?) (c) initiative success and key decisions (is it worth doing?)
- Initiates Success Criteria and Key Decision Matrix: Frames criteria for overall initiative success and the critical decisions to be made.
- IP Index / Product Differentiation Framework: Combines the key invention with end-user insights to define the benefits and features delivering a market-leading product design and IP position.
- Key Invention Learning Plan: Outlines key inventions and critical learning items required for value creation.
- Plans, coordinates and executes lab, plant-trial, testing and IP in strong collaboration with Roofing (Future Shingle) and Enterprise R&D units.
- Delivers customer-validated solutions meeting the BU-readiness requirement (success matrix) and effectively transitions projects for successful BU implementation.
Lead the R&D team to be a catalyst in transforming the way we innovate at OC.
- Drive the development of best-in-class organizational capabilities required to enable the Insulation R&D strategy.
- Develop and lead a high-performance, inclusive organization that fosters continuous learning/
- Rapidly build rapport and develop effective partnerships with all levels across the organization.
- Create a culture of collaboration and accountability, providing ongoing development opportunities.
- Identify and recruit strong talent, developing a pipeline of for succession.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in Chemistry, preferably organic chemistry; Advanced degree in science or engineering, preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an innovation environment
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Working with innovation, commercialization, new binder development, applications development.
- Building strategic and execution-focused plans, and cross business / functional partnerships, influencing leadership and teams.
- Experience in open innovation environments focused on identifying and incubating high risk and potentially disruptive technologies.
- Leading within matrixed organizations; leading cross-functional and global teams.
