Mid-level Systems Engineer

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is hiring a Mid-level Systems Engineer to support a Science Data System (SDS) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The SDS processes massive Earth Science datasets from multiple NASA and international satellite platforms, using advanced distributed processing, backend databases, object storage, and robust data pipelines.

The selected candidate will work with the Lead Systems Engineer and the infrastructure team, fulfilling the following responsibilities:

• Troubleshoot all system issues.
• Maintain database tables and schemas and seek ways to optimize database performances.
• Help optimize and enhance the current data processing system.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of system engineering documents.
• Help with migration and reconciliation of data to cloud

Required Qualifications:

• B.S. degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Mathematics, any branches of Physical Sciences, or Engineering from an accredited institution. Greater experience in lieu of degree will also be duly considered.
• At least 5 years of experience working with algorithms and processing systems, involving distributed multiplatform configurations. Working experience with similar Earth Science data systems, or satellite ground data systems will be highly valued.
• Robust programming and scripting skills in Perl, Python, Shell scripts, SQL, PL/SQL.
• Good theoretical and working understanding of databases like Postgres, and database schemas, relationships, optimization techniques.
• Self-motivated and agile and ever-ready to learn from peers, and through self-study, and implement new concepts and techniques.
• Strong attention to detail, and the ability to successfully engage in multiple critical projects with competing priorities, and with minimal supervision.
• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency required.

Desired Qualifications:

• Working knowledge of code versioning systems like Git and GitLab.
• Familiarity with AWS cloud, EC2, S3, Lambda etc.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab CI/CD).
• Exposure to containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) and orchestration tools (e.g., Kubernetes).
