Job Description

Position Summary
Manages the accounting and reporting for Washington Gas's benefit plans, including but not limited to the health and welfare and pension plans, and incentive compensation (bonus and stock-based awards) in accordance with the requirements under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in the United States of America (GAAP), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the Department of Labor, and the various state regulatory commissions.

Tasks and Responsibilities
* Maintains thorough knowledge of the terms of all Company employee/retiree benefit plans, the related policies and procedures and the accounting for the plans
* Collaborates with actuary and senior management in formulating and determining annual benefit valuation assumptions and in implementing the results re-measuring the Company's benefit obligations
* Researches and recommends proper accounting treatment and related procedures for new employee/retiree benefits, plan changes, benefit transactions, or newly created accounting guidelines issued pursuant to GAAP, the DOL, the SEC or the FERC accounting and financial reporting requirements
* Helps coordinate the annual plan audits through planning with the auditors, Treasury, and HR, and oversees the preparation and reviews the annual financial statements for the pension, retiree health and welfare, and 401(k) plans
* Acts as a principal liaison related to benefit matters for both internal audiences (Human Resources, Office of General Counsel, Financial Reporting and Regulatory Affairs) and external audiences (actuary, external fund manager, auditors)
* Helps maintain written policies and procedures and improves workflow, systems, and processes
* Oversees the preparation of information furnished in the initial filing of rate case data and evaluates/responds to data requests from the Commissions regarding benefit accounting
* Manages one-time benefits offered to employees, including change in control or retention agreements or other events that may trigger a plan settlement or curtailment
* Supervises the daily activities of assigned employees, including task assignment, evaluating, training, performance management, compensating, motivating, coaching, and developing processes and procedures to ensure the achievement of goals
* Performs other special projects as directed by the Senior Manager of Technical Accounting and Benefits

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
* Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or related business discipline is required
* Master's degree in accounting may be substituted for one year of experience requirement
* Minimum of 6 years of experience in an accounting function
* Experience in benefits accounting preferred

* CPA license may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement.

* Extensive knowledge of GAAP, particularly interpretation and application of the requirements of Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) Topics 710 - 718
* Experience preparing and reviewing stand alone financial statements, subject to GAAP and SEC requirements
* Demonstrated ability to research and prepare formal written accounting position papers
* Proven ability to establish rapport and effective working relationships with business partners, supervisors, subordinates, and peers
* Demonstrated ability to present ideas logically and concisely to diverse audiences at all organizational levels, both verbally and in writing
* Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data, and to identify relevant issues in solving business problems
* Proven ability to use computer software and applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power BI) for research, analysis, and reporting purposes
* Working knowledge of PeopleSoft (or similar ERP system) General Ledger module and reporting tools preferred
* General knowledge of SEC regulations and filing requirements and/or the FERC uniform system of accounts preferred

* Experience in or understanding of the regulated energy industry preferred

We offer a competitive salary range of $113,000 to $164,000 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
