As a Front End Principal Engineer you'll use your extensive knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS to improve the Heroku user experience. You will work with real-time data streams, engineer for performance across browsers, and delight people by making the best software we can imagine. You will collaborate closely with Product, Design, and other engineering teams to spec, conceptualize, build, test and deploy new features for our large user base.

The Heroku Front End Engineering is a team of software engineers with a diverse set of backgrounds, different areas of expertise, and similar passions for software development that highly involves aesthetics, design, and cross functional/platform team work. What you will be doing:

  • You'll plan and lead implementation of product features and framework improvements using Ember.js

  • You'll work closely with the Heroku CLI team as part of a shared customer experience

  • You'll partner with the Heroku API team to evolve the API to satisfy product requirements

  • You'll brainstorm with Architects, Product Managers and Designers to conceptualize new features

  • You'll evaluate new frontend technologies for their potential to solve problems and enhance the product

  • You'll help our skilled support team triage bugs and troubleshoot production issues

  • You'll mentor other engineers and deeply review code

  • Monitor our systems as part of an on-call rotation

Requirements:

  • 8+ years working on large-scale, complex production web applications

  • Proficiency with TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS

  • Proficiency with development tools such as Webpack, npm, Yarn

  • Broad experience with frontend frameworks, such as Ember and React

  • Experience implementing responsive web design to support mobile and desktop experiences

  • Strong understanding of frontend testing methodologies, test-driven development

  • Strong understanding of web application security

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a distributed team

  • Ability to take ownership of projects and drive them to completion, while multi-tasking to support other projects and initiatives

  • Ability to communicate technical and architectural designs with clear documentation and visualization

  • Experience successfully mentoring other engineers across the experience spectrum

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field

Additional experience a plus:

  • Loves using Heroku to deploy your own apps

  • Integrating apps with Salesforce

  • Enterprise compliance requirements, such as HIPPA and PCI

  • Cloud infrastructure for web sites and services, such as Terraform and AWS/Cloudfront

  • Extracting API concepts into common libraries

  • Elixir language, which the Front End team uses to implement front-end-specific utility APIs

  • Rust language, which Heroku uses to implement Cloud Native Buildpacks

For New York-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $211,500 to $306,600. For Colorado-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $192,200 to $278,600. For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $192,200 to $278,600. For Washington D.C based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $211,500 to $306,600. For Maryland based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $211,500 to $306,600. For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $211,500 to $306,600. For Hawaii-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $192,200 to $278,600. For Illinois based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $192,200 to $278,600. For Minnesota based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $192,200 to $278,600. Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
