Admission Job Description

Job Summary

Responsible for the recruitment and evaluation of prospective students. Plan events and outreach to students and secondary schools and perform related public relations and marketing functions to aid in the overall mission of the Smith College Office of Admission. Support office senior leadership by mentoring and assisting in the training of new admission officers.

Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Essential Functions

Communication (20%):

  • Crafts email communications for on-campus and virtual recruiting events, and outreach programming.
  • Build admission program registration pages and event landing pages using Slate CRM.
  • Craft event promotion email messages driving registration, as well as post-registration confirmation messages to students and guests with relevant event details.
  • Build and deploy post-event surveys.
  • The office of admission utilizes an internal team system. The person occupying this role will serve on the communications and campus visit/admitted student program teams. As past of the communication team, assist in the proofing and editing of all outgoing communications.
  • Contribute to other communication team projects as assigned.

Recruitment & Yield (35%:)

  • Plan and coordinate up to six weeks of travel to recruit students and manage an assigned geographic territory determined by the Dean of Admission.
  • Visit high schools, attend college fairs, conduct workshops and meet with alumnae.
  • Initiate and maintain effective communication between Smith College and high school counselors from a diverse range of high schools.
  • Manage communication with students, parents, counselors and other constituencies.
  • Present on-campus and/or virtual information sessions and participate in leading workshops during events for prospective and admitted students.
  • Other duties, including travel, as assigned.

Admission Reading and Selection (35%):

  • Interview and evaluate prospective applicants.
  • Read, evaluate and vote on admissibility of candidates for admission to the College in coordination with a team of colleagues under the direction of the Dean of Admission.

Other Functions

Administrative (10%):

  • Keep abreast of pertinent developments at Smith College, in higher education, and in the field of professional admission work.
  • Cooperate with other administrators of the college where necessary, especially Student Financial Services and the Alunnae Group.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses):

  • Bachelor's degree, minimum of two years of relevant experience in admission or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficient in the use of Slate admission CRM or a similar platform.
  • Must hold valid driver's license and be able and willing to travel by both car and airplane.
  • Experience with public speaking required.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to demonstrate fluidity with a variety of software and database management platforms.

Skills:

  • The ability to effectively and efficiently develop and execute several key projects simultaneously.
  • Must be able to work independently, have strong organizational and planning skills, excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Required strong analytical and computer expertise including familiarity with MS Office suite and CRM platforms and a willingness to adapt quickly to changing technologies.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to effectively interact with people of all backgrounds and participate as part of a cohesive team working toward a shared mission.
  • Ability to use sound judgement, creativity and vision appreciated.
  • The ability to articulate the values of a liberal arts college to prospective students, parents and secondary school personnel is important.
