We have an exciting opportunity for a PLSS Development Lab Technologist to join the team with Barrios, a teammate company. We're looking for a Development Lab Technologist to join our team as we support testing of NASA's Portable Life Support System (PLSS).

Responsibilities

The PLSS Development Lab Technologist will:

    Perform a range of duties in the PLSS Development Lab that includes the design, development, operation, and maintenance of the different test systems used by the Portable Life Support System (PLSS) development team. Specific duties may include:
    • Supporting test stand design and fabrication, which includes working with test engineers on the physical layout of test stands during the design phase.
    • Serving as Test Operator on complex test systems of spacesuits, PLSS, and PLSS components. PLSS components include water pumps, water evaporators, CO2 scrubbers, pressure regulators, fans, and process control sensors. Testing includes operations of pressure systems, vacuum systems, instrumentation, and using LabVIEW.
    • Coordinating workloads across PLSS technicians.
    • Managing pressure systems, which includes tracking dates for Class I's, relief valves, and flex hoses; generating the necessary documentation to perform calibrations or inspections; and then working with the pressure system office to complete those tasks.
    • Managing instrumentation calibration, which includes monitoring the recall lists, generating the required documentation, and coordinating with the appropriate calibration labs to execute the tasks.
    • General PLSS hardware management, which includes monitoring the movement of controlled hardware with proper documentation, working with JSC property personnel on annual inventories, and executing test system maintenance activities.
    • Maintaining PLSS Development Lab chemical inventory tracking and reporting.
    • Managing the lab's inventory of consumables, including items such as gloves, cleaning supplies, tools, fasteners, safety equipment, or instruments.
    • Periodically providing status to management on lab and test rig activities.
    • Helping to identify project risks as they relate to labs, lab equipment, and GSE.
    • Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • High School diploma, plus five (5) years of experience, or any equivalent combination of education/experience.

-OR-

  • BS Degree in Engineering Technology or related field.

Preferences:

  • Experience with CREO, light fabrication (8020, Unistrut, sheet metal), 3-D printing, tube routing and bending, and basic electrical cable routing.
  • Experience with process instrumentation (pressure transducers, temperature sensors, gas constituent sensors).
  • Experience with JSC Pressure Systems Management requirements.
  • Experience with functionally testing and troubleshooting complex test systems, including leak checks, instrumentation checks, or electrical troubleshooting.
  • Experience with lab operations, upkeep, and maintenance activities in the JSC PLSS labs.
  • Training certifications in cleanroom operations, hazards in oxygen systems, and ESD control.
  • Ability to develop processes and procedures and advise on areas for improvement.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with JSC organizations, processes, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the Engineering Life Cycle

  • Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
  • Must be able to work in a team atmosphere.
  • Must put forward a professional behavior that enhances productivity and promotes teamwork and cooperation.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • This position may require some commuting and traveling to other installations as needed.
