Temporary Associate Project Biologist - Las Vegas

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants has a need for an Associate Project-level Biologist to join the Las Vegas, NV team. In this role you will conduct a variety of tasks including biological field surveys, compliance monitoring and radio-telemetry of Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii). Our Las Vegas office offers a unique work environment and specializes in Natural and Cultural Resources.

This is a temporary, hourly, non-exempt field role with 90% of the time in the field.

What you will accomplish

  • Conduct biological natural resource field surveys collecting observational and spatial data concerning a variety of vegetation, terrestrial and/or avian species. Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms.
  • Complete biological survey reports, data entry, impact assessment, and assist in Endangered Species Act, wetland delineations and/or Clean Water Act permitting. Conduct research as appropriate and assist with proposal development.
  • Adhere to the safety program and looks out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.
  • Use radio-telemetry to track Mojave desert tortoise, sometimes in rugged terrain.
  • Perform compliance monitoring for construction projects, including pre-construction avian and desert tortoise surveys.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience completing biological surveys, fieldwork, habitat assessments, wetland delineations, and/or construction monitoring.
  • Prior experience with GIS software (ArcPad) and Trimble GPS units and ability to use technology for data collection.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing technical documents.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Must have a clean driving record and pass a background check.
  • Adheres to the safety program and looks out for the safety of others, promptly communicating and mitigating safety hazards.

Preferred or Helpful

  • Experience in Southwest US.
  • Knowledge of Desert Tortoise habitat in Clark County.
  • Vegetation survey, wildlife surveys, measurement experience, or wetland delineation experience is a plus.
